Every time I visited heartless perry or whatever that guys name was (the first fence), he always just said said the same old story about getting beaten up by goons...
Heartless Perry is one of the few NPCs in the Thief series I seriously wouldn't mind bring my sword down on. He's fat, annoying, he ratted me out, his voice gets on my nerves, whiney, and has no sense of good black market protocol. I mean, I'd figure if you're dealing in stolen goods, you'd want to me kind of discreet about it. But Perry?
"How's the THIEVING going GARRETT? Did you ROB the whole block? Hey GARRETT, like my new sign out front? It says, "HEARTLESS PERRY'S STOLEN GOODS, MOST OF WHICH ARE PROVIDED BY A THIEF NAMED GARRETT WHO LIVES IN THE APARTMENT COMPLEX ONE BLOCK OVER, HE'S IN THE ROOM TO YOUR RIGHT WHEN YOU FIRST ENTER AND GO UP THE STAIRS!". I really think that new sign is going to attract all kinds of customers!"

That's pretty damn funny. But just out of interest, wouldn't everyone but Garrett qualify as an NPC?

Yep. But there are few I have the desire to kill.

And to clarify my point of view about the magic-wielder and their staffs:
First of all, they didn't need a staff in the previous games. And without a staff they are more dangerous- why, they are almost useless WITH their staff . I just feel that it takes away from the "magic" if it is depending on a piece of wood easily lost or stolen.
The staff busines seems to me like if Garrett had to use a cloak (or whatever) to hide in shadows.
...but then again in T3 Garrett needs gloves to climb...
Personally I found them just as dangerous. Maybe it's just my memory, it's been a while since I played the previous two games, but I didn't feel like there's a notable difference.
I liked the staff idea because it gave the magic rules, even if minimal. Having some system behind the fiction adds to plausability in my oppinion.

Totally. Too bad I can't without going into Dromed, 'cause there's no way to get past his unbreakable glass.

...But if you got seen on that mission, the fence would say something like how Garrett should stick to the shadows more. But, I have never been able to trigger those. Has anyone else been able to get the fences to utter those special speeeches?
Yup. I noticed those, too, the "fence comments on your performance" sound files...you can listen to them manually with the Sound Drone program. (I think that's what it was called; you should be able to get it with a search of the forum).
I only ever managed to trigger two of Perry's comments in-game; the one where he mentions how stealthy Garrett was, and, in another runthough, the non-stealthy one. If you wait around in his shop straight after the Hammerite Cathedral mission you should be able to hear them yourself.
There were a few more comments from the other fences relating to missions, which I never actually heard during play. It's a shame...disappointing, the way Deadly Shadows gets progressively buggier as you go through it. :tsktsk:

ive noticed a lot of guards (city watch or otherwise), who walk around with the hilt of thier sword on the bottom and the tip of the blade up by thier shoulder...ive searched and havent found a mention of it. very strange...

Buggy physics engine. I personally havent encountered that, but sometimes the swords dont go properly back in the sheath. I've encountered a few things like that, though not many.
