Tony - I mentioned "no means no" in my very first post that started off this sub-thread. If you had read that, you'd know that I'm not talking about the poorly crafted and unenforceable California legislation. I was talking about "yes means yes" being a more appropriate principle and slogan than "no means no" and asked why it was doublethink. You keep ranting about the CA law, but it wasn't the point.
When I first Googled this legislation, I wondered how could it possibly be necessary, since "consent" is surely a simple and self-explanatory concept. But after listening to you, I'm starting to think that maybe a law IS needed to spell it all out for people who lack the necessary intuition to figure out when it's OK to initiate sex with someone.

Crucified? After a verbal as well as physical attack that Clarkson himself didn't deny? I'm sorry, but if that isn't grounds for firing someone, what is?

Dousing the office with gasoline and torching the place to the ground?
I know that's where I draw the line.

That would work too, but only because of the carbon emissions.

I haven't been following this thread in detail, but having just read the article that says he's been canned, and with all of the talk about "no means no" etc. I can't help but draw a correlation between Jeremy Clarkson and Jian Ghomeshi, if any of you have been following the news in Canada last year.
(

They HAD to suspend him, just like they did Jian, and investigate.
Honestly I have so much Top Gear to catch up on (if I felt so inclined) that I'm sure I could still be watching old epiodes by the time the series finally ends. Who knows?

Crucified?
It's a simple joke about Jeremy Clarkson having the same initials as another famous person who was supposedly crucified.

The inability to perform one's job ?
I've seen quite a few people who were not adequate to do their jobs. Both when I was working as a civil servant as when I worked for a commercial company. Sometimes it seemed that as long as you are nice and polite, and know how to say the correct mumbo-jumbo, you are guaranteed the job. Waste of a space. But HR or higher management is often afraid to fire someone. Or management was so incompetent themselves, that they couldn't judge another employee's ability.
Clarkson behaved like a dick. He should have been reprimanded. Punished. Suspended. Fined. Whatever. But he does make one of the best-watched tv programs ....
in the world. Cancelling the show for a few incidents is overkill.

Ah, gotcha. He's popular, so he should get away with physical assault. Glad we've cleared that up. Just in case, how popular would someone have to be to get away with rape?

I am sure they can find or manufacture a gruff, opinionated, ignorant but endearing curmudgeon to take his place.

You just have to be a rapper and not white, then you are free to do as you please, unless you are Kanye West. Or a professional football player in the US. Or any athlete or movie star for that matter. If you do get called out, you simply say it is because of alcoholism and go to rehab. Say a few sorries and do a 15 second "Learning is Knowing and Growing" spot for Saturday morning kids TV. All this and more, unless you are a conservative black man, then you get Cosby'ed. BTW, I am on the fence with Cosby, but it does not matter. He has been ruined by the press. Right or wrong, he has been convicted out of court. He may still have his day in court though.
Clarkson, at least to me, looks like a heavy drinker. Maybe he had a number of pints before returning to find his steak not available as ordered. He lost his cool and punched one producer out after a verbal tirade. Not good. While drunkenness is no excuse, it would explain the over reaction to a missing piece of beef. If Clarkson is naturally this oafish, I hope I never bump into him.
All of the other talk about racism and being general dick on set is just fluff. He probably violated his contract and certainly violated the law.
Millions will miss new shows. Millions still love many other celebrities after their downfalls. Time will tell if Clarkson will ride into the sunset, or pop up elsewhere. As much as I liked the show, he should not have beat down a lackey.
