Hey, guys. LONG time; no post from me. I still troll around the boards now and then; still love Thief. However, I could use some help because i've got an issue that's just confusing me more and more and I can't figure it out on my own. By the way, sorry if there's a post about this already. I've searched the boards and what little I can find on this only confuses me more, so i'm left to start a new thread for answers.
Ok, here's the issue: I've been playing Thief 2 for a LONG while now, and I thought I had a copy with the final version (Which I understand is 1.18 if you patch it) because I never noticed any issues with my gameplay or any real bugs outside of having to make a few adjustments to play it on my more modern PC. Tonight I was just about to play the entire nine episode "Keeper of the Prophecies" campaign (I'd been playing the seperate missions released before the entire package up till now and HAD played the first mission or two of this package in the past, but never played through the entire package) when I noticed it said as a bare minimum I should have Thief 2 patched to "1.18".
Anyway, come to find out I have "1.9.0.0". I went to The Circle to see what patches they had and found both "Thief 2 Patch (v1.18)" and "Thief 2 Premier Patch (v1.18)" and it said that the former (Not the premier) only works with version "1.07", which I assumed "1.9.0.0" is higher -- but then I wasn't so sure, so I came here to try and find any info or past forum posts about the difference between "1.9.0.0" and "1.18" -- but I found nothing except alot of other unrelated posts which just confused me. I even looked at some of the FAQs here but they didn't seem to mention it or anything about "1.9.0.0" (Or if they did I was already so confused it went over my head). So I went back to The Circle; downloaded the premier patch (BTW, the link to thiefmissions.com at The Circle for that file is broken; links to "http://dl1.thiefmissions.com/patches/T2PremierPatch107-118.exe". I found the "patches" section of thiefmissions.com myself though); and when I started to install it THAT patch tells me it only works on "1.07" too. So, now i'm totally dumbfounded.
Can SOMEONE help me out here? I've been playing Thief 2 and MANY FMs (Including some of the KotP ones) without any issues (that I know of anyway) for a long, long time now. Is "1.9.0.0" under "1.18" as I suspected? And if so do I still need to install the 1.18 patch? I'd definately not want my game crapping-out on me halfway through the campaign.
Also, i'm not sure how much/little this relates to the version issue....but I just noticed the "ddfix" file that's around ((
http://timeslip.chorrol.com/ddfix.html)) and now it has left me wondering if i'm missing something about Thief on my modern PC or not. Should I consider downloading that? Any opinions? I noticed it said if i'm using "1.18" there are additional advantages it provides -- but I don't know if i'm fine with "1.9.0.0" or not since I can't find info on it.
I could really use some help on this because i'm just throwing my arms up in the air now. I just want to sit down and play Thief 2 and this FM (Which is an awesome FM; one of my favorites) and get the most out of my game without any bugs or without missing-out on the game running at its best performance because I wasn't aware i'm playing it on a lesser quality with graphics or sound or whatever (EAX doesn't even work in my options since I got this PC, but it didn't seem to effect the sound quality....I think), so I REALLY can use the help. Anyone?
BTW, when/if I get some answers for this, can we add them to one of the FAQs? I might be the only one asking, but I doubt i'm the first person to run into this confusion. Maybe at least something about where "1.9.0.0" ranks in the list of versions for Thief 2?
Thanks in advance,
"TafferMonkeys!"
UPDATE: It seems I might have received the answer I was looking for after all, but I could still use a bit of experienced reassurance.
Evidently I made a mistake in my confusion I wasn't aware of. When I first checked my version I used frobber's instructions for checking in the KotP campaign readme seen in DarkLoader.
Quote:
Thief 2 Patch
To check for this...
Right-click on thief2.exe
Click 'properties'
Select the version tab
Click on Product Version
This should display a value of 1.18.
If not, then goto <http://www.thief-thecircle.com/media/patches/>
This was where I got my "1.9.0.0" version. I had thought I also checked my startup panel and got the same result, but just a short bit ago I accidently had my panel pop-up and it read "Version 1.18". I suppose that was my mistake and I apologize if I wasted some thread space on the boards here, but i'm just wondering if anyone thinks there's anything I should still be concerned about here? I could still use some advice on the "ddfix" file and any other opinions on the subjects I mentioned. Regardless of the mistake, I have learned that there's alot about my game I might not know and if anyone thinks I might be missing out on something do fill me in.
Alright guys, thanks again for the help. It was nice posting on the boards again after so long; might do it again sometime (Builder help you all. :laff: ).

is there a 1.9 version? is that the german version? I have installed the 1.18 version.
Sensut on 12/10/2008 at 12:43
May be, but anyway the 1.18 is the latest version.
TafferMonkeys! on 12/10/2008 at 13:00
Thanks, Sensut, but unfortunately after downloading the patch it seems to also say in the readme "This patch will only work on version 1.07 of Thief 2." just like the patches I downloaded from thiefmissions.com and thief-thecircle.com say. One of my concerns here (and sorry if I wasn't too clear before) is if I try installing the wrong patch for my version 1.9.0.0 copy and it royally screws my game. That's one part of my confusion I need answered: what patch is safe to install over my 1.9.0.0 version (and do I even need a patch for that version)?

Evidently there is. :D
No, i'm pretty sure it's a US copy (Guess I forgot to point out it was a US copy of Thief 2 as well; sorry).

TafferMonkeys! - I also have the 1.9 version but if you go back to properties for theif.exe you will see that the File Version is 1.9 but the Product Version is 1.07. I think this may be the source of your confusion. You can update Theif.exe with the patch with no worries.
If you are still concerned, make a copy of your Thief.exe and name it something like ThiefOriginal.exe. Then use the 1.18 patch on the Thief.exe.
If there are any problems (there won't be) you can delete the Thief.exe, remame ThiefOriginal.exe to Thief.exe and you will be back where you started from.

A few things, the most important being first:
If you can play FMs without a certain massive obvious problem, you do have v1.18. If you were using v1.07, none of the AI would move.
When applying the patch, it's not just the .exe that gets updated. Lots of files are.
And I think this is a better place to go for patches: (

Ah, thanks for the clarification R Soul! :thumb:

Premier Patch can be installed on any version of T2. It's a self-extracting archive (7z), so it simply overwrites files with patched ones. Then use Darkloader to 'Optimize' the game. e.g. to make it FM-friendly.

Sorry about the late reply.

Guess i'm not the only 1.9 after all. :cheeky:
Thanks for pointing that out. I think R Soul was right though, because i've had no trouble with my FMs (Finished playing through "Keeper of the Prophecies" this week with only one technical issue non-patch related. Awesome FM series, BTW; enjoyed it greatly. Big kudos to frobber). All the same, if I do need to install a patch or help a friend install one I know how to be safe about it now, so thanks for that info. :cheeky:

Much thanks, R Soul; very reassuring. That The-Circle link is where I got one of the patches (because one of those patch links didn't work, as I mentioned above). I'm pretty sure I do have 1.18 installed now, which eases my mind.
DJ Riff
I've noted what you said, and thanks for the info. :)
Again, thanks guys for all the help. It's good to know that there's a faithful community of Thief fans with various talents to help when someone needs it. Best of regards to you all. :thumb:
