Sorry for bringing back an old thread but I just got around to playing this mission and I had a blast! Definately not for the vertigo-challenged!
I made a short video jumping from the top of the tower, you can view it (

I thought the cannon was going to be used to damage/kill some baddies coming through the portal when climbing up there.
