We're studying late 20th century music in Music History (a musical period I pretty much hate) and today listened to Poeme Electronique. While listening to it, I couldn't help but be reminded of thief, especially at about 57 seconds in. Some parts are just sci-fi-ish, but some of the mechanical sounds remind me of Thief II, and the voices and bells remind me of Thief I. Some of the sounds even remind me of the Pagans and zombies.
Just wondering if the Thief community felt any of the same vibes.

I hate 20th century too. Strangely enough, I made it till the end of the piece. I'm feeling pretty bad now though ;/ Seems to me that Varese's point was: whenever the listener gets accustomed to a certain color, let's wipe it out completely... messy, methinks.
As for connection to Thief, well - any electronic ambient-like music will sound Thiefy, because that's the style used thorough the game and it fits the atmosphere, especially when lacking complexity (i.e. dumbed down to a single 5 minute drone, or quasi-heartbeat drum). So - yeah. I don't have the nerves to listen through the piece again looking for specific Thief-like ambient sounds, but they're there indeed.
I don't dig contemporary classical music enough to give you any other examples.

Just proves that all music majors are half-deaf I guess

Well I guess it isn't really hard to have one ambient sound sound like another. It is interesting to think, though, that without this period of music, it's unlikely Thief ambiance would sound like it does.
Oh come on, at around a minute in you have to admit that high-pitched sound is almost exactly the same as the one in the background when Garrett and Viktoria were running experiments with the rust gas and cultivator. At 4 and a half minutes I am strongly reminded of some ambient track somewhere in the game, though I couldn't quite name where.

This is somehow a lot less silly and more unsettling with the video. I kind of like it, especially after around 4:30.

I think the silliness come from how.. pretentious it seems (as are many songs from this period, like 4'33'') The video seems more silly to me, but interesting all the same.

Yet another one that reminded me of Thief. Sounds like the track used in the Mechanist chapel in Casing the Joint/Masks. It's not all that surprising, I suppose. This music came out no more than 50 years before Thief did.

Nah, I think it's some of the really cheesy sounds that do it. :p
