Of course this is in Mississippi:
Quote:
JACKSON, Miss. - A fight is brewing in Mississippi over a proposal to issue specialty license plates honoring Confederate Gen. Nathan Bedford Forrest, who was an early leader of the Ku Klux Klan.
The Mississippi Division of Sons of Confederate Veterans wants to sponsor a series of state-issued license plates to mark the 150th anniversary of the Civil War, which it calls the "War Between the States." The group proposes a different design each year between now and 2015, with Forrest slated for 2014.
"Seriously?" state NAACP president Derrick Johnson said when he was told about the Forrest plate. "Wow."
Forrest, a Tennessee native, is revered by some as a military genius and reviled by others for leading the 1864 massacre of black Union troops at Fort Pillow, Tenn. Forrest was a Klan grand wizard in Tennessee after the war.
Sons of Confederate Veterans member Greg Stewart said he believes Forrest distanced himself from the Klan later in life. It's a point many historians agree upon, though some believe it was too little, too late, because the Klan had already turned violent before Forrest left.
"If Christian redemption means anything — and we all want redemption, I think — he redeemed himself in his own time, in his own actions, in his own words," Stewart said. "We should respect that."
State Department of Revenue spokeswoman Kathy Waterbury said legislators would have to approve a series of Civil War license plates. She said if every group that has a specialty license plate wanted a redesign every year, it would take an inordinate amount time from Department of Revenue employees who have other duties.
SCV has not decided what the Forrest license plate would look like, Stewart said. Opponents are using their imagination.
I envision something like this:

Seriously, who gives a shit if he was, after the war, a Klan member. This was a Confederate State. They are honoring Confederate Generals. He was a Confederate General.
And, regardless of whatever revisionist history you may now find on the internets, the Klan was formed - during his time - as a fraternal organization to maintain order in the crumbling South, spurned on by pure fear of retribution (from blacks and Northerners alike) and coming face-to-face with the complete end of their way of life. Of course the whole thing went horribly wrong, and the Klan quickly became an organization of hate and murder--the dark underside that rears its ugly head whenever a mob-mentality is prevalent.

Forrest wasn't just a SOB he was one hell of a SOB. His victory over superior numbers at Brices crossroads is still studied at West Point. Of all southern Generals he was most brilliant in the heat of battle. After Shiloh he captured half of General Shermans troops on one side of a deadfall then, unsatisfied, rode across and into the other half hacking and slashing before he realized none of his troops followed. Sherman shouted "kill that bastard" whereupon a musket shot Forrest through the side, the ball lodging against his backbone. He responded by grabbing the soldier by the collar and pulling him onto the saddle as shield for his retreat.
It is true he was a slave trader and KKK founding member until they took an unsavory turn and he parted company but he was not in charge at fort Pillow where he had yet to make General. Two incompetent Generals were who argued at every turn and he had to sneak his cavalry past surrounding Union troops to even get into the fort before finding out they planned to surrender and having to sneak out again, his entire cavalry past a tight cordon. No doubt he considered blacks as less than whites and carried out his orders with grim relish to "put the skeer" into further black troops.
He was a fascinating man and one hell of a soldier but I won't be putting his tag on my car. The old south is gone and good riddance. Those who wish to resurrect it do so oblivious of racial sensitivity and are fools. I appreciate history but I'll stick to reading Shelby Foote. No target on my car thanks. Downtown Jackson is difficult enough to navigate unscathed.

You have Andrew Jackson on the $20 bill, and you're worried about Nathan Bedford Forrest on a handful of car number plates??

In my 17th (out of 21) fight, I knocked a guy from Sussex clean out. I mean he was ASLEEP. Cam I get on the $3 bill now? :p:cool:
He probably shouldn't have been allowed in my weight class, honestly. He was a class below, and binge ate to meet the weigh-in minimums we later found out. He just didn't have the metabolism/body type to hang in the heavy weight class.
Very lean kid. Good fighter, but couldn't hang with someone who drops bombs. He was more technical. Depended on fights coming to decisions. He banked on being defensive, getting enough punches in/blocked to win in the decision. Either that or he thought he'd tire me out.
Outlasting/outscoring is a common strategy in this situation. He failed to calculate one factor into his equation: I hit hard enough to nullify his guard, plus I am still fast for a heavyweight. I basically blew through his guard, he dropped his hands for a split-second, and I gave him a right uppercut square on the jaw. G'night mang.
I want my $3 bill now, please.
Oh, I lost only one fight, and it was a doozy. He CLOBBERED me. KO in 2 rounds!!! I quit fighting after that. Maybe someday I'll tell you the entire story about my career in the ring.

Here I am trying to bring good-natured racism back to the threads, and you guys are talking about money.
No wonder Mississippi is still a State. YOU ALL HAVE BLOOD ON YOUR HANDS!

"Seriously, who gives a shit if he was, after the war, a Klan member. This was a Confederate State. They are honoring Confederate Generals. He was a Confederate General".
Considering that the majority of southerners are conservative and conservatives pride themselves on being patriotic god fearing men... why would anyone honor someone or a group of people who mutinied, and are traitors to the United States government, our government, our nation. They tried to overthrow the government. That is very far from being patriotic. Anyone trying to overthrow the government is usually put in jail or killed. They should have hung every single one of those traitors.
