Sorry about this.. Tried lgntforce, compatability modes - can't install Thief1 - by Rinky78

Ok, I'm a bit afraid to ask this question because someone will bite my head off, but bear with me...
I have fought with Thief 1 (not Gold) the whole day. I'm running WinXP home Edition with SP2 and I have tried everything I found in FAQ and the forums.
I did the -lgntforce -thingy about 8 times, I waited for over an hour for the installer to start, just as advised in the FAQ, I tried all possible compatibility modes for both setup.exe and setup.now.exe. Sometimes the cd spins for a while and then nothing.
The cd-rom worked in my old system so it should be ok.
When I decided to reboot the system there was a message saying "The request to end the selected 16 bit task has timed out. The Win 16 Subsystem may be unstable. Press OK to terminate the Win 16 Subsystem or Cancel to leave it running." I checked the taskmanager and saw that wowexec.exe and setup.exe were just sitting there, not responding. I even tried some regedit things suggested for 16-bit subsystem problems - nope.
Any idea about this or should I just give up on Garrett? I'm at my wits' end here.

Are you suggesting I just spent 6+ hours working on an installation that could have been done in 4 minutes? 'Cause if you are, you're right :) . I can't believe I didn't try that first, especially after the recent fight with Oblivion add-ons.
Thank you, fellow Finn, kiitos!
Although now I'm having a new problem... Now the programme says "Thief requires 100% DirectX 6 compatible drivers for your video/3D card. If you do not have such drivers, you may experience some problems while running Thief." and complains about the indeo video codecs.
I reinstalled the iv5play.exe, I tried older Nvidia drivers, I tried another version of the codecs (the one in FAQ) but still the same messages. I even tried it with the texture patches.
Oh, as much as I enjoy the game I can't stand this anymore... Perhaps I should get a win98 computer just for Garrett.

Rinky78, Don't give up and you don't need a comp w/Win98 on it. I too had a problem getting Thief to load on mine, Xp SP2. It can be done. There is an issue with the current Nvidia cards though, I'm currently using a 7800GS AGP and running NGO's latest drivers. What you running?
Here's what I did..
Put the CD in and when it auto runs click out of it.
Find the setup .exe on the CD and right click it.
Go to properties, compatibility mode, run in win95.
Double click the setup.exe.
Once Thief is loaded and patched find the Thief.exe and set compatibility mode for win98.
At this moment I'm trying to get out of the Hammerite prison, play has been flawless, eye-candy Xcellent, and FRAPS says I get 200+ FPS.
Taffer heaven..

PS System details are a great help...

Thanks a lot for you help! Unfortunately I still haven't been able to fix anything - if I patch the game I get 'no cd' error message even though the cd is in the drive.
Anyway, I have Nvidia Geforce 6800 GS (pci), intel core 2 duo 6400 (I haven't yet got as far as the dual core problems :)). As I mentioned above, I tried older nvidia drivers but no, didn't help.
Edit: Ah, now I got it patched. But the old problem of "Thief requires 100% DirectX 6 compatible drivers for your video/3D card. If you do not have such drivers, you may experience some problems while running Thief." still persists and then the familiar nagging about the indeo drivers...
Oh, and I have the latest nvidia drivers, 93.71. Apparently Thief has worked with those for some people.

Thief in all it's permutations should run for you. The Codecs may need a boost now and then, but ignore the DX tag. All versions will run with DX9.02 and it's updates that you have on XP.
The new Vista DX version 10 is an unknown at the moment, but the DX that comes with XP is compatible.
The problem, as noted occurs mostly with Nvidia cards with THIEF.

Sigh... I guess I'm just a very unlucky person then.
I ignore the DX tag, but then comes the evil Indeo message (and I've boosted those codecs again and again) and no matter whether I ignore it or continue, there is a microsoft error message of death: has encountered a problem and needs to close...

The SoldOut versions have some known issues, I thought - like they're unpatched or something? Just be sure to apply the patches. Or maybe it was something else...

Try running the Codec's before you actually start the game.
In T2X, for example, I run the Codec's from the desktop before I start the game.
I had some startup problems when I first installed T2X. But putting the EXE on the desktop and starting it before the game solved them.
Now I only need do it once in a while.
