Sorry about this.. Tried lgntforce, compatability modes - can't install Thief1 - by Rinky78

I have the Sold Out edition of Dark Project. Seems to have issues, yes... And I have patched it.
I do run the codecs before I run the game, but it still crashes. But I'm still trying!

Wow. I feel blessed whenever I see one of these posts. I've never had a problem installing or playing Thief on ANY version of windows. Currently, I run Windows Server 2003 and Thief 1/ 2 install fine...without having to use the lgntforce command. I wonder what causes such a wide range of behavior on systems? You really wouldn't think that hardware would cause the OS to not install an old game like Thief.
What type of sound card are you using? Perhaps you could try updating the drivers for that as well? I've heard of Thief crashing due to sound card drivers as well.
Best of luck

Yeah. Strange, isn't it? I've got Thief Gold, TMA, and TDS installed, and I've had to do everything in the FAQ for the earlier games to work, plus fiddle with the compatibility modes. I'm posting to this thread 'cause I couldn't get the Thief Gold DEMO to load with -lgntforce (research for the Encyclopaedia Project). I have the downloaded package file on my drive. I used the compatibility mode and got what I needed, afterall.

Still no luck for me, I'm afraid... I've checked everything a million times because I'm so afraid I've just missed something obvious but no. I think I'll give it one more go this weekend, start everything from the beginning.

Open the task manager and try to start the game. Look for a process called "wowexec.exe". If it starts to loophole (99% processor time), it's an infamous bug that is horrid to get rid of. This may sound a bit arcane, but you can try changing your temp folders to c:\temp
Create that folder and check your environment variables, usually both temp folders default to %USERPROFILE%\Local Settings\Temp
Good luck!
Edit: Ah forget that, that doesn't apply to your current problem.

This is just wonderful! Great! I'm overjoyed!
I got Thief 1 running! Ok, ok, I was too excited to patch/fix but it installed without safe mode, the indeo codecs installed properly (I think they never actually did before), I got sound, I got the video in the beginning - I got it all :cheeky: .
At least now I have something I can work with, right now some silly little texture errors can't bring me down.
The problem, however, is that I'm not sure what helped. I threw everything I had at the programme (lgntforce, compatability modes, shut off everything else running, cut my comp from the net etc etc). Perhaps the combination of all those. But for some glorious minutes I heard SR's voice and everything was well :p . What a feeling of achievement!

Just to confirm: At the moment all's well (had to change my nvidia drivers etc but that's a small price to pay :)) and I'm on my first mission!
Thanks so much to everyone who helped me out, couldn't have done this without you!
