It would depend entirely on how well it was done.
First off you'd have to have the difficultly on Realistic or Expert or whatever so that being caught and hit with a sword/club/arrow would have real consequence.
Then you'd have to realistically populate the world with a working day-night cycle that dictated people's activities (like working, eating, sleeping) in a realistic way.
Finally you'd have to have real consequences for stealing in the way people act and react and the level of security. Random minor thefts might cause minor increases in security like hiding valuables, adding more numerous and more complex locks, being more vigilant, more patrols, more guards etc. Fleecing entire streets in one night would equal vastly increased security, with curfews and "shoot on sight" orders for anything suspicious.
Repeated theft of one shop (despite extra security if you could) should result in the shop owner actually having to relocate or go bankrupt.
The world would really have to be massive, and properly populated for this to work. Naturally the game would have to be coded JUST as Thief gameworld since the entire behaviour of the people and the world only act as a thin facade for this theft simulator. And if you had a real day-night cycle you'd have to have people getting up and going to work and you needed to change in the day so you didn't look so suspicious all your black hoody on a summers day. As a plus you'd be able to recon places in the day.

SE, now that's what I'm talking about :)

don't worry, in 15 years this type of gameplay will be regarded as antiquated as it is replaced by larger and more advanced technology.

What gameplay? You mean stealth? Hell no it won't. If anything, it'll be even more developed.

I definitely like SE's idea. :thumb: And I agree with failure; maybe by then 'virtual' games will have become more affordable, where all you need is that helmet-type headset/system (and those sensor gloves) that enables you to feel totally immersed in the game. Now that would be fun! I don't think stealth gaming will ever become outmoded.

As I see it the gametype I describe is the only way to actually bring the game forward. Anything else would just be a remake for the sake of better graphics and tbh The Dark Mod is going to provide excellent tools for this. Of course TDM will provide some technically superior gameplay options because of the strict adherence to sensible in-game mechanics - just look at the new rope arrow videos for a glimpse into the future of Thief-type gaming.
I just hope that some of the excellent FM authors get on board with it and that we get more than one T2X standard campaigns.

But I have yet to see a game with a "full-fledged open world" AND a truly convincing story to tell.
A gut feeling tells me this will not work out. It contradicts everything I know about how to tell a convincing story. A full-fledged open world where you are free to roam wherever you like just seems not to go together well with the necessity of a dense line of events that describe a thrilling and engaging story.
Have you played Gothic? All three of them have great atmosphere and storylines, and all are large open worlds.

Never played it, but did hear good things about it.
