Soulforge (played properly) is one of my top 4 OMs. (The other 3 are Cragscleft, Bank and LOTP.)
Maw is probably my least favourite, although Trail of Blood runs it close for last place.
But I'm talking minor rating differences here - all the OMs are pretty good to play.
I agree. I like all of the OMs, though some take longer for me to warm up to than others, like Soulforge, Bonehoard, and Bank. They were all missions I hated at first, but then I grew to like them, and then love them. The only missions I STILL cannot stand are "Shipping/Receiving", "Precious Cargo", and "Kidnap". God, it'll take a while for me to actually LIKE them.

Strange that although it's the worst of the three, Thief DS is the only one with a half decent final mission (the Museum - I wouldn't really count the bit with the witch).

At first time I was afraid I didn't move fast enough in the Maw so I just ran through it ('cause I was scared that Constantine would end the ritual before I could reach him). But the Beasts were great (I love those bug beasts and crey beasts, can't get enough of them...). Sealing the Portal was easy but welcome change.
The Soulforge was my first epic mission (would call the place "end-boss", similar to Overlook in the Shining) I still love it. The masked servants' "Please, someone kill me" gave the creeps and is so far the only mission I purposely (sorry my lack of English) killed all enemies I could.
"Liked" the Soulforge a bit more, I really hate/love that place.

I liked them both. Soulforge had puzzles and you could make your own mines, but I get lost really easily in games, even with a map and compass. I liked Maw for the scenery and the fact that for the most part I knew where I was going.

I hated the Maw. Infact I hated all those pagen type levels. Soulforge was Long and quite hard in places, but it had something the Maw didn't...It was bloody scary. Reminded me way too much of System Shock 2.

Did anyone ever try some mass murder in the Maw? ie. did anyone trying killing every beast that comes along the path? My guess was always that the teleporter at the start of the Maw sends the beasts back to the start so, in theory, they'll stop coming if you kill enough of them.
I thought Soulforge was the better of the two since it was so much harder and had so much you had to accomplish. With lots of secret routes it was more of what the game should be.

I have tried that. It's actually pretty fun trying to get to the bottom killing EVERY creature on the way. Best of all, there's no penalty to it, even in Expert, so you can just stand in the dark and lean and slash as they look for you. :sly:
Not sure about the teleporter trick. Maybe there's a way to see, but I wouldn't know how to check.

I must agree that sometimes great fun comes from different ideas of whacking people. Playing with the elevators in Soulforge saved many water arrows and froggies (and there is no pleasing sound than crushing of those iron bastards... Darn I couldn't improvice anything for those little spiders).
Rule 1:Improvice and have fun, try things. Don't worry, be happy.
