I have found the source of all evil!
I recently played Rose Cottage again and noticed: hey, there IS sound in the movie. So I checked the audio format of this movie and of the original movies and made a few tests. And already on second try I was successful:
It's the 8-bit Audio. For some reason Alchemy refuses to play the sound of movies as long as they're on 8-bit resolution. So I converted the sound using VirtualDub to 16-bit and, voila, there was sound.
Possible solution:
Convert all videos to 16-bit sound and be happy.
I will see if I can write a batch file for vdub.exe (command line version) to offer a "fix" that does this automatically for the user, so there's no need to download a package with all the videos converted.

I will look for these videos. If there is no way of batch processing, I will take my time to "upgrade" the audio as welll. Means noise reduction, upsampling, frequency restortion and so on. I can do this for the english and german versions of Theif 2 at least. However, batch processing the files directly would avoid much work and MBs of downloading, especially when it comes to the french and italian files.
