You can imagine my confusion when I first heard of the Ecco the Dolphin games. "Why the hell did they name a dolphin after a shoe?" I wore Ecco shoes in the late '80s.

It's all about gameplay.
Do you really think it would be practical to give you controls to simulate how you exaclty place your feet for optimal quietness?
This is "simplified" with simple rules such as loud/quiet surfaces, and a predictable movement/quietness system such as crouching is quieter.
The exact reality is not simulated, but the difficulty is, and in a way that is at least similar to real life.

I agree with Dominarius, the system works fine as a gameplay device even if it doesn't quite fit reality.
If you made it too realistic, then, after crouch-walking for too long, Garret would be forced to say "Owwww!!!" when he first stood up due to cramps in his legs, alerting everyone within 3 roombrushes.

Where are Ecco from? I have 2 pairs of shoes and one pair of boots, which will last forever.

speaking of sound...
last week's episode of 24 had jack lockpicking his way into that bank guy's house
either i'm hearing things, or it had the same lockpicking sound as thief - or something Very similiar atleast
it stood out as a sound obviously added in post-production by being too loud and flat

If I was trying to move stealthily while crouched I'd be using my hands to move along as well as my feet. That would reduce the amount of weight on my feet, hopefully reducing noise.

Dear sweet god! That game takes me back. I'm guessing it had a prequel, I remember having a copy of it stolen from me a decade ago, at least.
Either that, or I've been drinking too much tonight . . .
