Hi guys,
For me the most important aspect within the thief genre is the audio.
Im sure you all realise the reason why.
I have an asus xonar ds connected to my gigaworks (analogue).
Ive just started replaying thief 2 and noticed that all sounds seem to becoming from the centre speaker (5.1) or just the front 2 when i change to quadraphonic in the control panels....very annoying im sure you can imagine.
I cant enable asus' version of eax as it instantly crashes thief ....i pressed on.....but not having 5.1......or quadraphonic (same problem with 4.1)...i just cant play it. Im using windows 7 64bit...and have 7.1 enabled within the control panel (i can only enable 5.1 by configuring 7.1 and disabling the side speakers)
Any help is appreciated...i will research the previous threads, many thanks....all hail the woodsie lord.
I have tried all the speaker configs in the control panel, and the corresponding asus xonar panel....but nothing works...best i can do is stereo...which for a thief game....i just cannot do..i have never played a thief game with stereo (just the front two speakers before any smart alecs comment).

Thanks for the help, i did as instructed and eax was definetley present within the options menu. But when i booted a load....thief 2.exe has crashed and the fault lies within HsSrv.dll (asus audio driver)
I can play the game without eax.......but all sound comes through the centre speaker when i have 5.1 chosen. When i choose quadraphonic theres only sound in the front two speakers :(

Could this be related to Microsoft removing EAX/DirectSound 3D in Windows Vista and onward?

Most likely it is. Creative card owners use Alchemy to cure this (partly), and if your onboard sound chip was made by Realtek, there is a software called 3DSoundBack on Realtek website (it didn't help me, though).

Yeah, I gave that "3D SoundBack" program for Realtek cards a try and it didn't work. Maybe it is because it is at version 0.1. :) I even tried games it explicitly claimed to support (like Halo), but still no dice.

I use the asus xonar, enabling ds3dgx definetley crashes the game....but there should still be quad speaker support...as this has nothing to do with eax.

This is why I continue to buy Creative sound cards...
My love for Creative ended a long time ago, I've even reported them to the BBB this year for their horrible Win7 drivers.

However, to this day there isn't a single older game I that have not been able to get working in full 5.1 surround sound + DirectSound + EAX using ALchemy and my latest Creative sound card...
even the latest broken ALchemy 1.4x works if you use dsound.dll from versions 1.2x or 1.3x
wish i could help more, hope you get your card working!

Nope...still not working. Think ill have to invest in an ancient pc for these old games.
I chose the asus because of its features. My PC is also my home entertainment centre....i had no choice to get the asus xonar and connect it to my amp, it was best choice for films etc. Asus are really shite at driver updates aswell.
