Disliking 2 out of 4 is a fair assessment, I reckon, and sound disincentive to buy another. (I lied earlier, I did actually play SP in SC 2... for about fifteen minutes).

I personally wonder why PT gets so much hate. I'm playing it now and find it almost identical to the first game. It looks great, there's more outdoor areas which I find nice, and the story's more cohesive than the first. What's not to like?
CT is the best in the series though. I will agree with that. I wasn't able to play DA because of the shader 3.0 requirement but have heard it's very buggy.

It honestly amazes me that people can enjoy the "canned stealth" garbage that passes for gameplay in the SC series.
Because it's better than no stealth. I don't know any other games that focus primarily on stealth the way Thief and Splinter Cell do.

I'm not quite sure what you mean by "canned stealth", but I'll try to answer anyway: for me,
Splinter Cell at its best is to
Thief as
Call of Duty is to, say,
STALKER. It lacks the complexity and interesting emergent gameplay but it is polished and, if you don't expect it to be the latter, fun.
Thief is a delicately prepared meal cooked by an experienced chef -
Splinter Cell is tasty cheeseburger.

I thought the worst part of SC1 was the linearity, SC3 the lack of difficulty, and SC2 a combination of both.

all except Double Agent are win
but DO NOT install an old retail copy of Chaos Theory - it has star force than can/will eff up ur PC.
instead, buy the XPLOSIV re-release without starforce. or if ur copy has starforce, do not install it, but download the RELOADED release.
I am not suggesting piracy, I am just warning you about protecting your computer from starforce.

I've dealt with Starforce before with Prince of Persia: The Two Thrones; it's easy to remove, so that's not a problem.

Or just install it, patch it, and apply the nocd patch before you run it.

The Starforce drivers are also installed along with the game. They have to be removed via the device manager.

They aren't installed until the first time you run the game. This is the case with a lot of other Starforce games too, although some, like GT Legends, use the highest level of protection and install the drivers after a forced reboot. I have both SC3 and Scrapland installed on this PC, and have never had Starforce drivers installed. I even ran the removal tool to be sure, and it found nothing.
