They aren't installed until the first time you run the game. This is the case with a lot of other Starforce games too, although some, like GT Legends, use the highest level of protection and install the drivers after a forced reboot. I have both SC3 and Scrapland installed on this PC, and have never had Starforce drivers installed. I even ran the removal tool to be sure, and it found nothing.

I can confirm this with my Chaos Theory Collector's Edition. Upon trying to play the game for the first time, I get a message stating that the system needs to be restarted because it just installed Starforce. After the reboot, trying to start the game normally will then actually start the game, provided that Starforce hasn't broken something in your system.

I just ended up getting the XBOX version, bypassing all of that hassle. It was a console game, after all, first and foremost.

I purchased Splinter Cell Chaos Theory years ago for the PC. It is a fantastic game... but I will never buy another Ubisoft product ever again. Why? The software that was sneakily installed onto my PC of course. "Protection system installed" What the **** did you just put on my PC?!?! The sound in the game was so amazing though... For example, on the first mission, when you are outside near those tents in the rain, you can hear the rain drops falling all around you. If you walk up to the tent, you hear the rain pattering on the cloth, and if you walk up to a building, you hear it pattering on the roof. The wind sounds absolutely beautiful, as does the sound of the waves crashing against the shores behind you on the lighthouse level. The enemies in the game are smart, and they don't just let you kill them. When I think about it, it's such a shame that I can never install this game again or buy anything from Ubisoft again. I've contemplated sending it back to them with a letter explaining as much, but I am too lazy, so it will likely sit on the shelf for eternity. It's just too bad that they have no respect for me, a once satisfied and paying customer.

Dude, just install the game, install the patch, and unrar the no-dvd crack before you run the game. No starforce, no dvd, no problems.

Ubisoft stopped using Starforce in 2006, quit overreacting. They listened to their customers' complaints about that years ago.

One should not have to break the law in order to use something they paid for in a safe manor. That is not an acceptable solution for me and it should not be one for you either. If they offered an official patch that nuked this stuff, I might be able to forgive them, but until that happens my opinion stands.

I dunno, it's the same solution I use for every game, except for stuff on Steam or the rare case where a publisher removed the protection from a game once it's been out for awhile. After having to track down a replacement for a cracked Thief 2 CD, I can't say I feel particularly bad using cracks for games I've purchased legitimately.
I'm just glad that Chaos Theory and Scrapland have no-cd patches, as most of the SF games I have were either never cracked, or couldn't be cracked. Hell, until Earned in Blood was released on Steam recently there was no way in hell I was going to buy it.

The discussion in this thread prompted me into trying to install my unplayed copy of Earned in Blood, it's implementation of Starforce sounds just like your description of Chaos Theory.
Hell, the latest patch even worked without problems with the cracked EXE.

EiB was yet another starforce game I bought on XBOX to avoid all of that and play it from day 1. It is one of the only game I have ever played on console w/actual video options.
