I got the game on the 2nd, only to discover that I still hadn't got around to fixing my DVD drive ... :p
Currently I've only played just past the cell stage and ... it was fun. Pretty much what I expected, really. Creative, engaging, the choices aren't fantastically deep, but they are meaningful and do give you room for self-expression, and most importantly of all: it's something I can share (sort-of) with my 2 yo daughter.
(My creature, apparently, needs to be pink.)
Of course, I haven't really played very much yet ...

I've been playing Spore for a while now and I've got all the way until the tribal phase. Some first impressions for the interested:
Spore is quite entertaining, but it's not exactly the second coming of christ either. I can see it getting boring after a while (actually, the creature phase can get repetetive really quick). The game feels as cartoonish as I feared, but you can still make your stuff look pretty good if you give it some thought. I also like how the choices you make during a phase affect the things your species can do in later phases (it's a little primitive system, but works).

Well, I've got through to the tribal stage now ...
The creature stage was still fun and engaging, but also quite repetitive. From a game play point of view the cell stage did a better job of integrating your choices into the way you play the game. The creature stage is more stat based then physically simulated, and the minute to minute game play suffers.
The big advantage of being stat based, however, is that you get pretty much complete freedom about how you want to arrange the parts on your creature. By far the most enjoyable part of the creature stage was seeing how my creature progressed as I got more and more DNA and body parts to play with. I really identified with my creature by the end of the stage.

I'm assuming all of you are in a different country or something? cause Spore isn't out for me until tomorrow. Not that I'll be buying it, since my scholorship company hasn't paid tuition on time so I don't have the overage, which means I'm flat out broke...cheap bastards.
I guess I'll just have to bide my time watching youtube vids of various excellent/perfect creations, such as the chocobo, the tonberry, the azure knight, abe the mudoken, earthworm jim on his pocket rocket, etc, etc, etc. Well, at least all that you tube watching showed me how to make a flying creature in the creator.

Australians got it on the 2nd, we got it on the 4th, I think some euros got it early too. I presume the early release was semi official as they could have just not turned the authentication servers on until the 'official' release date if they really wanted to enforce it.

Yeah, I'm a little pissed (far less than I would be if I were in Lancer's position. Sorry man!) I downloaded the game, reasoning that Walmart isn't going to have it midnight tonight--and may not have it until they get in a new shipment, which varies store to store. I figured if I downloaded it I could play it immediately.
Anyway, I downloaded Spore and paid for it already, only to find out that I can't decrypt it and play it until about noon tomorrow.
Screw you, EA!
I thought they'd use your IP to find out your location and make the game available to you on time where ever you are. But I guess they wait until the very last place on Earth jumps into 09/07.
Whatever. I literally waited three years--since the GDC where it was unveiled for the first time. I can wait another day.

Wow, the civ phase was really pretty poor. It looks all fun and games until you notice how thin it is. Well, at least designing your own buildings and vehicles was fun.

That's right, we got it on the 4th as well.

Just picked up the Galactic Edition myself. Haven't installed it yet, but I watched the National Geographic DVD, and it's a cool little documentary about HOX genes and evo-devo science wrapped in a framing device about Wil Wright doing research for the game.
The Galactic Edition also has a REALLY NICE box. Solid, etched plastic outer case, good quality fold out disc holder.

The Australian release data was also on the 4th, but I believe a couple of our stores broke the release date, which is why I got it on the 2nd.
