History does tell us that making sequels to Deus Ex and Thief is quite bad for your business...
So how many bad sequels do they need to release before we can start talking about the "Deus Ex" / "Thief" developer curse ?

Did DX2 and Thief 3 actually sell poorly? I was under the impression that Ion Storm closed mainly because of that other half of Ion Storm.

The interesting thing for TTLG will be to see how this affects DX and Thief. What does this mean for Thief 4? Nothing good since DX 3 is late and over budget, and Thief has never risen to a substantial profit margin.
Actually, I think I've heard some around here suggest that DX3 was pushed back deliberately to buff up Square's next financial year. I don't know, that's outta my comfort zone, but there's definitely also an opportunity here - if DX3 manages to rake in the cash right after a Final Fantasy title managed to fuck up so capitally, it might serve to give the Eidos franchises a significant boost in credibility in front of their new owner.

I don't know about Thief 3, but DX2 grossly underperformed. You can find the numbers (
http://www.ttlg.com/forums/showthread.php?t=126316&p=1845710&viewfull=1#post1845710) here and in the opening post of that thread, but, to put it simply, DX cost some five million bucks to make and sold circa one million copies, whereas DX2 cost approximately four times as much but only sold some 1.3 million copies. I doubt Dallas would've had that much to do with Austin's later closure since the former had shut its doors almost four years before the latter.

Well I only ever played one FF game, and I was thoroughly unimpressed. It was FFX-2. Here we have a 3D world where the player can't even control the camera, and the always annoying random encounters made exploration a chore. It DID have some good music though. Also, unskippable cut-scenes always bring my reviews of games down by at least two points. Okay, I understand, you want to make sure I know the story. Here's the thing though, I may be playing the game again or starting over for some reason, ever think of that?
I've never played any Tomb Raider games, but if they were on gog, I would probably give them a try.
My suggestion to Square/Eidos: Get the proper permission to release some missions for The Dark Mod, say a 10-mission campaign. If you did, I would gladly pay $30 or so for them. You would benefit because you wouldn't have to create an entire game from scratch, and I would benefit because I wouldn't have to suffer through a consolized mess of a game.
As for DX2 under performing, I actually bought two copies of that game. One for the XBOX and one for the PC. I ran out and purchased it immediately on release and finished it in like two days.

Aah... tsk, if you'd bought 3 copies it'd have kept them afloat.

To be fair to FF, FF X-2 is about the worst representation of the franchise (outside of something like Mystic Quest) you could have chosen.

The only ones worth playing are 6, 7, 9 and maybe 12.

Or Final Fantasy 1 on the NES. I suggest doing it without using savestates...but only if you're a masochist.
Phatose on 16/5/2011 at 04:50
A true masochist would play it on an actual NES. Using an emulator already removes the ever present chance of having your save deleted while you tried to get the damned NES to load the game properly.

You're forgetting 5. 5 has some fantastic gameplay, so long as you play a good port (i.e. the GBA or Snes + Fan patches)
