The only reason I don't care about FF anymore is because Square started fucking it up after FF9. Seriously, every title since then has been a huge fuckup right up to and including the latest catastrophe - FF13 (a contender for the worst game I've ever bought).
Thats why you rent it :)
I lasted all of twenty minutes before I put it back in the box.
On that note, I recently added FF7 to my PSP and played a bit for the first time. While I"m saving the game for overseas, even the first hour of the game is pretty well done. Like many well-remembered games, it does an impressive job of storytelling despite technical handicaps like no voiceovers.
In a way, comparing the two is a microcosm of the games industry as a whole. Rather than using skilled storytelling to overcome the limits of the medium, game developers now exhibit a visible "Hollywood envy"(thanks Will Wright) and simply try to create a CGI bonanza. It gets sales because people are wowed, but it simply doesn't have the staying power of great gameplay. I got bored of 13 in only a few minutes because thats how long it took for the "ooh, shiny!" factor to wear off.

You're forgetting 5. 5 has some fantastic gameplay, so long as you play a good port (i.e. the GBA or Snes + Fan patches)
Agreed, FF5's refined job system was truly grand.
Also Final Fantasy IV would like to have a word with dethtoll. The first good game in the series, really.

Yeah, no. The story was fairly thin and the characters unsatisfactory.

The first and last good game in the series was FF8.
And by "good" I mean "You're trapped in a shack in the middle of winter in Alaska with a TV, gasoline generator and exclusive limited edition of Twilight, seasons 1 to 4".

And not a loaded pistol in sight.

As long as IO Interactive doesn't get buried under all this ...
I want Hitman 5.
