I'm in two minds about whether they should have done more.
Given the price of entry, yeah, I think they (Square) should have done more. I can't fault GOG too much for these issues: they work with what they're given and with the constraints placed upon them. If the price had been $5.99, that would have changed my opinion somewhat.

What should they have done? I agree that the price point that Square have put on the game is higher than the ideal but at least they have put some effort into providing a version of the game that will work on modern systems. If it was a simple re-packaging of the game as available elsewhere I'd understand the frustration but at least it seems like they have taken some time to work on the game.

they can't - it has been explained by a GOG staff member. there are legal issues that prevent them from adding 3rdparty fixes/files.

Ouch - please don't misquote me like that. I realise they can't incorporate community mods without having to deal with legal problems.

Given that they (Square) have the source code, they could have exposed support for additional resolutions and FOVs beyond those originally offered, accessible only via cam.cfg if necessary (as menu modifications tend to be complex). It wouldn't have entailed a significant amount of effort on their part, and they could have worked with the community (namely Timeslip and jermi) to facilitate such changes, if necessary.

there is a strange "goggame.dll" in the folder which has no viewable call in the exe.
That's only there for the benefit of the windows 7 games explorer, not for the game itself. It stores the thumbnails and meta info that the games explorer needs.

Why? What will you get for your money that you don't have already?
If this is directed at me, I've never played TG, so I get a few extra levels. Plus the hopeful possibility of better support, since GOG has the source code and all (that may be naive of me, but hey). Plus, I get to support GOG, which I feel is worthwhile.
EDIT: So for some reason, I didn't even notice that the discussion had moved 2 pages on from the one I was replying to... forgive my lapse and totally useless addition :p.

The point being made is that GOG does 'NOT' have the source code. Eidos / Square Enix have the source code but they did absolutely nothing to prepare the executable before handing it over to gog. Eidos has had the source for 2 years now...plenty of time to have gotten it running and compiled with proper fixes. Instead, Eidos set a $10 price tag, and then left it up to gog to jury rig the game to get it working reliably on modern systems. Essentially, the same hacks the community has access to. Pretty lame considering the price they're asking GOG to charge.

I personally don't care whether GOG or Eidos did the fixes required to get the game running and its quite likely that most people who buy Thief from GOG don't care either. There is circumstantial (but credible) evidence that Square / Eidos actually have the source code at all. I'd love them to release it if they have it and if it had been included in the GOG release that would have been welcomed. However, we're not entitled to it and although price analogies are crass I probably paid more for my pizza last night than the amount they're charging for this game.
