Man, you're all a bunch of glass half empty types, aren't you?
They're selling the game as a downloadable executable on a popular website, giving tons of people who wouldn't otherwise play it easy access to do so. The game has been tweaked slightly, but not as thorough as it should've been. Therefore, the game works fine for some, but not others. The fix that makes the game work for just about everyone is but a click and a patch away. For various legal reasons, they couldn't include this fix alongside the packed release.
(...yet they offer up a soundtrack mixed by a community member as an added bonus without giving due credit. Go figure).
So, is it the best of situations? No. Is it the worst? Not really. I mean you'd be going through the exact same thing if you were to buy a boxed copy off Amazon, so why is GOG more guilty?
(...because they're advertising 100% Windows Vista/7 compatibility? Those...fuckers).
Hell, people. I don't know. Buy it, or don't. It's your choice. But don't make this into a storm in a teacup type situation.

That's some pretty vigorous tea-stirring you're doing. The debate is no longer about the issues but poster vs. poster.

Regarding the music, it's very likely that it was provided to GOG by square enix, and GOG simply didn't check it, rather than GOG deliberately thiefing it themselves.

This is actually the bit that makes me laugh most. At least one of the ddfix authors
works for GOG. If they'd wanted to use it, (or at least certain pieces of it.) I don't believe there'd have been any legal issues involved.
Edit: But thief 1 doesn't have the dithering issues thief 2 has, and ddfix can cause issues of its own. If the movies/video mem problems didn't crop up during testing, then there'd have been no reason to consider using it anyway.

Hi all, one of GOG minions here.

Since this was asked: no, GOG never asked for permission to use my soundtrack. I don't care for a royalty for stitching together what has already been there, but a side note from them to honor my work would have been nice.
First of all, let me officialy apologise for this.
Hopefully we'll be able to resolve it quickly and one of my collegues should contact you today.

As for that... which one? >.>
Taffer is so stealthy we absolutely have no idea who you're reffering to.

Thanks for coming here and trying to clear things up. :thumb: Also thanks to everyone who took the reins and pointed these issues out over at GoG.

Me!
Although I still don't think including ddfix by default with any game is a good idea, because of the in-game resolution menu problems and the colour key thing. (Edit: Unless Jermi fixed them since I stopped playing? But then it's not my code and it's no help anyway...)

Good to see GOGers here - I am Irenaeus on GOG forums :-)
You've definitely done something to the binary as the md5 is different and I can run the game natively in XPx64 on my 9800GT without resorting to DDfix.
Great to see you back, Timeslip :-)

Some random guy
I ain't
that random. :p
anyway, one of the GOG guys had a little tongue slip on the forum, and it seems like thief2 is going to be available sooner or later.

Breaking out of retirement from this board just to rant a little:
b1kerdude from GOG, seriously. For all his good intentions, his mini-crusade will eventually start to step on a few toes from both players and GOG staff. Could GOG have done more? Sure. For shame. Soundtrack issue? Great work CoK (love your work) but no tags were changed. His credits remain albeit a little out of the way. Easily fixable and GOG staff are looking into it.
GOG may have touted itself as having "goodies" but since when has that been the reason why people buy from them in the first place? If they were SELLING the soundtrack, even I'd have a beef with it but it's just EXTRAS.
The Thief Complete Collection available for the same price? So what? It's a physical copy that's subject to shipping costs and availability. Something a digital distributor wouldn't have trouble with. Are you going to start whining because different shops have different prices? Go to where it's ideal and pay what you think is fair.
For once, even I'm surprised with myself that I'm not being all uppity about the whole thing. I'm actually happy and excited that the classic Thief games are getting more publicity and what better way than with GOG who already known for being THE place to obtain legacy titles for a good price?
Thief has changed. You all know this since Deadly Shadows. If you're going to keep clinging, you're just going to be bitter. Enjoy what LGS has given us during their brief stay in the industry and keep the rest of the junk away from where it matters. Reactions like these aren't surprising from such a dedicated community but all these rage is best channeled to promoting Thief for what it was. For what it still is and what it will never be.

What in the nine hells does this have to do with Thief running correctly on modern systems?
