dethtoll, your problem with MMORPGs is not that they're timesinks because I never heard about anyone complaining that a game they like is too long. You just don't like grinding.
You really need to read your posts over before you hit that reply button. Of course I don't like grinding, but that has nothing to do with the fact that MMOs are a timesink. Did you even read
my post? If you would stop and think for a second, you'd realize that- duh- an ordinary game you can stop playing at any time- just hit save and then alt-F4 your way out. MMOs are a timesink precisely because you are roped into playing for hours, and
you can't leave without there being repercussions. It's like
work.

Why is do you find it so hard to believe?
sigh
Getting equipment, etc.
is enjoyable. But you can do that in a regular RPG too. Why do you not understand the point of all this- that MMOs are a huge waste of time?

... You have played an mmo right? The only thing from that list that is important at all to making a meaningful difference to your character is gear. Which doesn't matter much because you and every other motherfucker out there knows where to get the best gear for their class/level thanks to the internet.
The problem with mmo's is whats wrong with the public school system here on the American continent: they reward mediocrity. The bar is pushed so low when to get anything you just need to be willing to grind for it. It's the same fallacy the aforementioned school system has been pushing about work for the last century only in an mmo you actually get it. That's why their so loved. It's a second job like you can feel like you got that 'raise' for your hard work. Where in real life you need to be all buddy buddy with the supervisor even if he is a misogynistic prick to get anywhere. Just 'grinding' in real life is almost always fruitless.
Thats my theory anyway. Go enjoy your grind.

Sure, some people might enjoy mindlessly killing enemies over and over again to get a slight benefit. Some people might enjoy the hours upon hours you need to pour into the game just to get to the point where you start to enjoy it. I'm not one of those people.

I thought this was sarcasm, but I'm outnumbered.

Wait... how can you get to a point where you
start enjoying something if you are already enjoying it as you're getting to that point?

Uh, no? It seems the only "MMORPG" you played was Diablo 2. You lose nothing when you stop playing. Your XP etc. are updated in the real time and kept on the server, so is your position. When you log out and back in again you're exactly where you were. It's even easier than normal game, you don't even need to save. So I have no idea what you are talking about.

henke nailed it. You think anyone would be playing MMORPGs if they didn't have the grind, and you were able to create a level 99 character with end game gear outright? It's the character development that counts.

Why do you not understand the point of all this - that I do not consider my time wasted when I'm having
fun? Quite the opposide, having fun is about the only thing I am concerned about in my life. And if I didn't have fun playing a MMORPG, I wouldn't be doing it. It's dead simple.

I was just pointing out the grammatical wackness of catbarf's phrasing. I'm not taking sides in this debate as I don't really give a shit either way.

I'm guessing you don't play MMOs for the social aspect, Koki. I guess that's how you manage to make it fun. Because I've heard too many stories of people having to leave mid-raid and getting chewed out by their guild or expelled outright. And you obviously enjoy the mindless grind. That's fine. Some people enjoy sticking things up their penises. Whatever floats your boat. Just don't act like I'm some kind of asshole because I don't like grinding and I don't find it fun.

Of course not. Other people are only useful in MMORPGs if they want to buy something from you.
And yes, I do enjoy "mindless grinding", just like I enjoy mindless bunnyhopping in FPSes and mindless dancing in RTSes.
