Meh. There is no way of catching the atmopshere and brilliance of that game. SS2 has a special something I've not seen in any other game.
That said, I've been surprised before. Dune 2000, best game remake ever imo (not counting the excellent remakes done by the remakes.org community).

Tried the demo. It crashed my GPU for some reason. Wasn't super happy with what I played. The panel interaction is terrible (seriously: use panel, press number keys on your actual keyboard. Deus Ex: Human Revolution did this, there's no excuse for not doing the same thing here), also didn't like the way you adjust settings on the Sparq beam ("Press 'F' to adjust settings" instead of a slider?). I get that it's pre-alpha, but it's pre-alpha in a way that doesn't point toward them getting the gameplay fundamentals correct. And the cutesy 'I am picking up this thing and plugging it into myself' animations are kind of dumb. Well animated, but unnecessary.

My initial impression was also not that great, apart from the shot of nostalgia straight to the aorta. Then again, this is pre-alpha, so I hope they'll take criticism to heart.

About that animation that everyone mentioned. It was awesome on a first play, but then became annoying as hell. Although I know it's kinda rare situation when you upgrade your gear. If the devs are reading this, there should be an option to skip it (press X to skip). No need to cut it completely.

My first impression is that the modern graphics and controls make the old level design stand out as being really dated. The combat too. But I'll play it anyway.

A few people have made this criticism already and I am not exactly sure I understand what they mean. How exactly does the level design feel "dated"?

They better not remake SS2. Perfectly fine as, once you mod it up a bit.
I actually would not mind a SS2 remake at all. Some of the levels - especially later ones - are really badly done and seem to have been designed with only one approach in mind. Also, the combat could definitely use an overhaul.

The original level architecture was constrained by the limitations of.the engine and tools. So it is dominated by simple shapes like square blocks and split blocks with 45 and 90 degree angles. It was always blocky, but that was.forgivable given the tech and kind of goes along with the low res textures and sprites and stuff. In a modern engine with high resolution textures and fancy effects, the blocky architecture looks amateurish.
Also, some of the levels are overly maze-like with nonsensical structure and locations, like a.dungeon but with industrial looking textures. That was.acceptable in 1994 as a way to build up level complexity when you're limited to building with basic shapes. But in a modern engine it just seems odd.

My suggestion to them would be a) to speed it up and b) to allow the player to move and change where he's looking during it.

You can look where you want, and move(tho at a crawl) while those animations play. I'm guessing in the full game the Important Object Pickups will be more spaced out and so less egregious.
RE: blocky levels. I wasn't sure how to feel about them at first but I'm coming around. It does make the station feel more weird and futuristic.
Also am I missing something or can't you throw grenades or reload the blaster in the demo?

IT'S A SPARQ BEAM YOU IGNORANT SWINE >:|
Yeah, batteries and grenades don't seem to be working, if you want to recharge you can do so at the energy station.
I noticed all the $750 pledges have been snapped up, anyone here get one?
