Further, the source code is going to be released very soon, so you can have your cake and eat it too.
Wait what? Tell me more. I never managed to grab the leaked source from the Newdark patching business.

Yes, as heywood already stated, this convenience is extremely valuable, certainly nothing to scoff at or trivialize. Plus, Steam Link and Steam Controllers allow you to play all your PC games on a big screen TV. In addition, you have the social aspects, and tons and tons of sales. Steam is great for the consumer, and it doesn't cost us a thing.
What do you want Steam to do, somehow magically make the games you play better? Or maybe minimize your system reqs? Balance your checkbook?
Paying for any game via Steam is far and away better than buying it just about anywhere else, like Amazon or Best Buy or Gamestop.
I don't want Steam to do anything, or exist. I don't use Steam or find any of it's services useful. If I want to buy an old game, GOG suffices perfectly. I don't play new commercial games because they're all
HIDEOUS HOLLYWOOD GARBAGE.

There's nothing wrong with money-making, as long as the consumers are getting good value for money. Convenience is a great thing to have, and to that you can add good sales where games are very cheap, and long out-of-print games becoming legally available again. I enjoy the service of Steam or else I wouldn't use it, and I have no problem with Valve making a lot of money out of offering a valuable service to gamers.
It adds "value" to the experience of plebs who put zero thought into responsible consumership. If I want to play a game/discover a new game or contribute to making a new project a reality, I go out and do my own research. Plenty of Linux gaming news sites for me with announcements for upcoming or prospective projects. And it doesn't take much effort to dl and install a game. Linux package management really streamlines the process in fact, even if having to compile from source. In short, the convenience Steam adds is nothing more than an exploitation of peoples' laziness, and yes, I do have a problem with Gabe fucking Newell getting rich from it. You can tell in interviews with the guy that even when asked questions about the business world in general, he's completely disconnected from the world that exists outside the bubble of his "brilliant" fucking system of capitalist exploitation known as Steam. It's indefensible and I do wish more people would reject it on ethical grounds.
And GOG makes long out-of-print games legally available again without all the bullshit.

It's like a hipster version of GMDX.
What have we done to deserve this?
Pyrian on 27/8/2016 at 04:40
Looking Glass Studios lasted 8 years. This forum has been active for 16 years since it closed. We could not possibly be more deserving of hipsterism.

Too true :). I wonder if Bullfrog or Origin have similar forums. Never checked.

Stephen Kick via the Origin archives managed to get a hold of the source code to System Shock 1. He's said that he plans to release it later on. When exactly, he's yet to say.

So I've looked at the trailers and a gameplay video of the demo..
The one way they could absolutely screw this thing up in the most heinous but predictable way possible is by keeping with the orchestral score idea. DON'T DO IT. System Shock, and especially SS2, was about that cyberpunk industrial drum-n-bass. One of the best things about System Shock 2 was the soundtrack. I'm trying to give this project a fair chance, but if they go the same damn route as every other modern spacey FPS and opt for an orchestral soundtrack ~ the HORROR ~ the HOLLYWOOD SUSPENSE!! ~ they have officially tainted the name of System Shock unforgiveably. PLEEASE, developers! Find someone to make dark, heavy DnB for the game. Might I suggest one of the artists at (
http://www.ohmresistance.com/) <|||> ohmresistance, maybe the founder, Submerged. I think that would add a TON to the project. If one of them signed on, you'd have my enthusiasm for this remake.
Does anyone have any contacts with the developers? I might try shooting this advice to them. I don't mean to be self-righteous, but if these folks really feel as passionate as they do about the series, and really do want to do it justice with the <i>reboot</i>, they can't set the game to an orchestral score. It would ruin it completely. Orchestrated music IS NOT SCARY.

I gotta agree, they need to maintain the same style of music used in the original game. In fact there needs to be a nice toggle in the main menu of the new game that says: Use Original System Shock music.
icemann on 27/8/2016 at 17:39
Beyond the RPG elements (which turned out to be not AS big a change as it first looked) the difference in music between the demo and the original game has been the biggest sticking point for most people due to how VASTLY different it is. It was quite a massive misstep on their side on that aspect. THAT said, this was only a super early demo of the game. I'm sure after reading the vast amount of negative feedback they've received on it, that they will do something far more closer to the original stuff. Or at least I hope that they do.
Classical and Dead Space-ish music does not fit with the first game AT ALL.

Funny,
you seem horrified by it. ;)

I am rather horrified by the thought of them screwing this up by making it another interactive Hollywood movie, yes.
