In good news, CIG Manchester studio has been founded. Featuring Origin Systems and Warthog veterans who had worked on Privateer 2 and Starlancer. Eg Erin Roberts. They will be focusing on the SP component, Squadron 42.

Also now there's in-universe commercials for the (

Hornet variants pledge ships are on ATM. N.B. The Super Hornet and Aurora LN are limited edition pledges, both are only available until Oct 28th.

The 20 mil stretch goal of first person combat on select planets sounds interesting.
Very interesting. I remember when I was discussing this with the Hardwar community (my old favorite) doing an open-source port, and I was dreaming about the ability to walk around your ship and get out and walk around stations or planets, enter buildings, and have FPS combat. Add to that the seamless transition between orbit & indefinite seeded procedural worlds (infinite engine + space engine + voxelfarm!) and multiplayer, and you'd have the perfect open world space-sim IMO... So I'm not surprised to see this spark so much interest. I wasn't alone in some of my pipedreams.

Eve Online did this already actually. I haven't tried it myself though but the FPS portion is actually a completely separate game that is F2P. As far as I understand it the FPS game works on the same server as the MMO. Interesting stuff.
Also. They have apparently just met their 24 million stretch goal.

yesterday morning they were 7% toward their stretch goal of $25 million. That's from $24 million.
Just now I looked and they are 61% to 25.
That is $540,000.00 in less than 24 hours.
I'm amazed this hasn't been getting anymore attention around here. What is going on with this game is incredible and going to go down in history.
I understand EA didn't want to grant them the Wing Commander IP for use. I'll bet they regret the decision now.

That's either a lot of backers, or a lot of really well-to-do backers, or a combination of both. I'm impressed that the 'dead' genre that no one bought games for in its heyday has managed to smash every crowdfunding record there is.
VA: As far EA is concerned, they're probably going to try and do their own Roberts-less spin off the back of their success now.

I've had their stretch goal page up on my browser tabbed for the past few weeks just watching the stretch goals get ticked off and new ones appearing. At this point I think their just making up stretch goals, considering how many have been ticked off. It's scope creep overload.
I wish a few of the games which went the kickstarter route had done this in addition as they would have made an absolute bundle. Wasteland 2, Shadowrun Returns and Torment for example would have made HEAPS. Torment in particular as it was ticked off nearly all of its stretch goals.
I wonder if there will be a point when Chris Roberts will say ok we have enough stretch goals ticked off, or if he'll wait till people stop funding the new ones which keep appearing almost daily.

Jesus, just this week alone they hit the $24 and $25 million plateaus. Altogether this month they raised $5 million! This continues to blow the mind.

This has all the hallmarks of becoming a quasi-historical event.

History won't be fully written until after the game comes out and there's a verdict on whether it was worth it. There are two big swords hanging over its head now that have chopped lesser games, over-hype and feature-creep, or more like feature-sprint at this rate. But then again it has big things going for it, a past track record and a core formula proven to work -- sort of like you know each new Civ is going to be good because the formula works.
