You know, I'm actually at a point where I don't even think about my nick being SW related. I created this account in 1999 and haven't changed it because people are like, "HOLY SHIT DUDE - you've been here since 1999???"
Look, I'm not butthurt about the whole thing. I'm simply stating my opinion that there is no good endgame here. It'll make shitloads of cash and everyone will have fun, audience included. But some things just seem to me better left alone. Like Led Zeppelin and the Beatles. Then you have the Hitchhikers Guide, Indiana Jones, and the Jewish Bible. They were all great until stupid white people started adding random bullshit to them and fucked it all up. In the end it's fine - everyone enjoy and hold dear whichever parts you like. It's art. It's subjective. I just think there's a HUGE difference between the what made the originals special (a struggling young director, unknown actors, low-budget, desperation to make a good film) and this new situation (a calculated and ill-advised nostalgia trip to cash in on the franchise where the only artistic consideration is how many Jar Jars and Ewoks are safe to include to attract the kiddies without turning off the grown-ups. All against blue screen. Any of this sounding familiar?).

Oh shit, you guys, I swear to the gods that was a total accident. I thought I was just quoting her. REALLY sorry - you know I wouldn't do that. I've hardly ever used the moderation tools and just fucked up. I'll see if I can fix it. Bad bad bad. Mea Culpa.
edit: panic
edit edit: Ok, think I fixed it. I thought I'd deleted something.
So my response was: If you don't understand it now, you will.
Holy shit, my brain is fucked up of late. Apologies Vas.
edit edit edit: DID I delete something or was that the whole of the post? I don't see anything else missing. FUCK.
Yes, I know Vas is a girl, and have for some 10 years or so. Shitballs. Now if you'll excuse me I'm off to find my glasses. A moment ago they were right here on my fa-----nevermind.
Vasquez on 10/3/2013 at 06:25
Don't panic, of course I knew it was an accident. But I couldn't just let it go, now could I? :D Yes, it's all there.
And now you mistook me for a man :cheeky:
Anyways, on topic: if it's gonna be shit (and that seems likely), I don't understand how Hamill, Fisher and Ford returning could make it any worse. Imho if anything, it could be the only good thing - at least it feels something like a tip of a hat to the original fans.

I just changed my profile pic and location to reflect my idiocy. Penis=man, vagina=woman, both=MrDuck
OT: I think having them involved is going to tempt the writers to regurgitate things that worked well in the originals, and should have been left there. How many people didn't know going into Indy4 that there wouldn't be a scene with a snake? Everyone knew that. And it sucked. Just like how the prequels started with the sentence, "I have a bad feeling about this." OH HAI GUYS I REMEMBER THAT FROM THE ORIGINALS AND IT'S STILL (NOT) FUNNY!!!HURR HURRR" Nostalgia trips are typically rife with on the nose references to things that "worked before" because it was new. When ROTJ came out and Lando says, "I have a bad feeling about this," no one really flashed back to the other characters saying that once in each of the other films. It is only with repeated viewings that it has become a "thing" - and that's the charm of it. I imagine we'll have references about everything from Leia kissing Luke, to "Hey kid, that's 3 you owe me," and all types of other bullshit that will not be in the least amusing unless it's done as a spoof. Again, my opinion, but you asked for it. I don't trust Abrhams to get the difference. Having Harrison Ford on set to say "I'm not saying that" will probably help, but he royally fucked the pooch on Indy 4, running through the whole thing with a half-hearted grin on his face thinking, "I can't believe I'm doing this shit either...". Not how I want to remember the SW movies. Then again, the prequels have pretty much obliterated any sense of wonder and sanctity I once held for the franchise, so it's pretty easy for me to let the whole thing go. I'll take my kids and laugh at all the right parts and eat the hell out of some popcorn, because like the prequels, it will be entertaining in the least.
Maybe it's a generational thing. The originals, when I saw them at a young age, came at just the right time for me. There were life changing messages to consider - things like not giving up in tough situations, not having to live in the shadow of your father/parents, doing the right thing even if it means putting yourself at risk, etc. The prequels succeeded in turning that rich Joseph Campbellesque story into a boring biology lesson complete with slapstick and ridiculous explanations of every goddamn thing that never needed explaining, while totally fumbling the exposition of stuff we were actually interested in (The Clone Wars, namely. It's an army out of nowhere "BOOM!" Like magic! From who, for what? Who cares - look another explosion!"). How much more is that mystery going to be drained when you've got the three main characters on screen doing a bunch of "as you know Bob" bullshit?
I hope for the best, I always do. I hope I am so so so wrong because it would be the most awesome redeeming thing ever to have three more great SW movies with these characters that we love so much.

Bullfuckingshit. Ever since word of new Star Wars films first hit the net, you've been completely walled up in your fortress of original trilogy lunchboxes and prequel trilogy disappointment. Listening to you is akin to a night at the bar with a heartbroken friend who uses the horrible behavior of his ex to explain the futility of all future relationships as a whole.

And in nearly every post I've said something akin to "I hope it ends up being good," along with expressing my doubts and explaining why I have them. If I was that ridiculous about it, I wouldn't own anything of the EU, nor would I have patronized the prequels. Your view is that I'm in the minority in my disappointment over the prequels? :laff:
Let the record show that I have been in favor of the new BSG, the return of Arrested Development, Indy 4, Tomb Raider and Thief reboots etc., so don't try to play like I'm sitting on my porch in a rocker yelling about the good ole' days. There are specific reasons why this isn't a good idea, and all I've done ITT is articulate those, usually in response to a direct question from someone. My other posts are trolling cheap shots, meant in good humor and if you can't discern between the two I have no idea where you've been for 10 years.
And while we're in the boxing ring here, why don't you go ahead and list some franchises in which the 7th installment using characters 50 years removed from the original (or not) was just stellar? I'll wait.

I don't think you're being honest with this statement. People that truly "hope it ends up being good" don't precede that statement with screeds detailing why EVERYTHING IS DOOMED.

What do either of those things have to do with your relationship with possible new Star Wars movies
now? Whatever came before, you clearly have arrived at a place where new Star Wars movies seem like a dead-end endeavor from which nothing cool or exciting can survive. Except you "hope it ends up being good," of course.

Of course not. Why would you think that? I certainly didn't say it.

Because clearly
I'm the problem here.

This question is so ridiculously specific as to be unanswerable. Other franchises have been rebooted successfully years removed from their previous glory days--by all accounts the new Bond is pretty solid, for example--so why is Star Wars an exception?
Adding new entries to a beloved film series years after the fact is always a tricky proposition, and there certainly are a lot of landmines to be avoided. Star Wars is lucky, however, in that a new trilogy would actually fit into the current framework rather easily, seeing as how the first two trilogies already tell the stories of two different generations. Why not tell the story of the third?
There are a lot of reasons new Star Wars might not be good, but none why it
can't.

I can think of one: it's Star Wars.

I can think of another: George Lucas is on board as a consultant.
