Countering apples with oranges, on purpose or accident, is also at the heart of the issue, not how light or heavy-handed it's being delivered, not how chummy or teasing or douchey. It's like being lectured over a mistake you didn't make, over and over, with no end, no matter the attempt to get people on the same page so they can simply disagree on the same thing. After awhile it's stops merely being perplexing, and goes into maddening, with the context evolving from the topic to the persons involved.
