Keep expectations low, expect the end to be a terrible disaster, because it is, and there's just no salvaging it, and you may enjoy it.
I like them about the same, personally. KOTOR 2 did a lot of interesting things, in my opinion, and I enjoyed the characters more, but I think KOTOR is more satisfying overall and has more interesting locations to explore.

I'd more or less second that. KOTOR 2 is both deeper (in terms of themes and characters) and more frustrating (in terms of implementation) in many ways. If you can get it at budget rate, I'd say go for it, but you may want to wait until the Restoration Project mentioned earlier in the thread is completed. Then it might be a glorious game, if we're lucky.

Personally I found the latter a lot less satisfying towards the end of actually playing a character.
Except that in Kotor1, whether you're good or bad really didn't matter outside your character's alignment screen.

Actually, I noticed the dialogue options in K1 change a tiny bit depending on alignment, something that didn't happen in K2. Also, the party members attitude changed in K1 depending on treatment, something that, despite the god-awful Influence system, did not happen to any degree in K2.
And sure, in K2 the alignment actually changed certain allies and made certain quests available or not, but considereing how badly implemented they were, and how little it changed the story, it did nothing to enhance the experience compared to K1 and gave a lot of frustration in stead.
AND K1 actually had different endings depending on alignment!

Personally, I have only played KOTOR 2 and I thought it was great! Well, at least for the first 3 times I completed it. One light, one dark, one grey jedi. Then it felt like there was nothing left. But it was a great game...

is KOTOR 2 worth buying?
I recommend it. It's nice and if you explore every place, it's gonna be a long game.

Sith's Blood, how annoying gray is in K2! It always wound up being too much light or dark, forcing me to make out-of-character choices to balance things out.
Yet another thing K1 did better than K2.

It didn't, it just gave that impression. Which ending you got was based
entirely on one, single, decision on top of the Rakatan Temple. You could easily get the darkside ending and still be nominally light sided (or vice versa), so long as you made the 'right' choice.
Renegen on 3/7/2006 at 13:43
But IIRC that choice in the temple was not an open choice, it was decided based on what alignment you had at the time, so you had to play one way or another to get the right choice.
Vigil on 3/7/2006 at 21:27
No, it was open. You got to choose. The idea of course was that the player would make the appropriate choice for their character's alignment. Which is a little silly, when the inappropriate choice for their alignment had such colossal and unavoidable implications that the player would simply have to go along with.

That's what I used to think too, until I checked it by going all dark and then choosing light. At this point it becomes blurry, however, as I havent played that game in awhile. But my lasting impression is that your aligment prior to that choice had an impact of some sort, or gave you the option to turn things around after the choice was made.
I can't quite recall though, so I can't prove anyhting.
