One of the first post - Broken Age Kickstarter successes is showing results. The first gameplay trailer for Starlight Inception has been released. The game is a space combat sim for PC, PS3 and Vita. The current tentative release target is August.
The studio is headed by a long time Lucasarts veteran who was lead designer on Star Wars: Galactic Battlegrounds and its expansion (the Age of Empires 2 reskin).

Hmm... I've been watching lots of X3 videos in anticipation of X Rebirth coming out this year, and compared to that the visuals in this video were pretty ass (not to mention EVE). That doesn't always have to mean too much, but for a space shooter, if it's not looking great then you're just floating in space... It's hard to imagine they're going to out-do EVE or the X series on strategic gameplay. The one thing it has going for it is an orbit-to-planet mechanic, which is admittedly cool, but that Infinity MMO game will kick its ass on that too (if only we knew whether it's coming out in the foreseeable future). Maybe if it had some other hook, like with Limit Theory where everything is procedurally generated...
At any rate, this hasn't sold me with what I've seen or read on it so far.
It's maybe academic for me anyway, since if I'm just going to get one space shooter, I'll go with what I'm familiar with, which is the X Series.

They're trying to be like classic space flight sims from the '90s/early '00s, eg Wing Commander, TIE Fighter, X-Wing, etc. Those games had you managing where to divert your power and the like. They aren't trying to like your aforementioned glorified spreadsheet games.

Then why are they showing an external view (besides a two second-long excerpt around 2:01)?
This looks arse.

You're reading too much into promo material, it's just a trailer. A lot of kids these days love 3rd person games, plain and simple. Eg Skyrim's 3rd person option is surprisingly quite popular.

I'm not impressed by the trailer to be honest, it looks pretty arcadey, and the visuals typically need to be great for that kind of game.
I miss those old space-sims though. I took a notion last week to reinstall Tachyon:The Fringe, which shares gameplay concepts with old Star Wars stuff and of course Colony Wars. Maybe the trailer doesn't do it justice, which is a bit of a fail on their part.
