Stealth pistol over regular pistol for the following reasons (other than it's quieter):
* High rate of fire
* High magazine capacity
* less kick
Making the stealth pistol in effect a mini-assault rifle. Plus, it looks cooler.

Stealth pistols are superficially cooler, more accurate and more refined. As a stealth player myself, they are essential.

Okay, okay! Heh, I can see why you guys say the stealth pistol is cooler/better. I started over anyway so this time I can change everything.

Normal pistol here.
--Enemies will hear the stealth pistol just as easily as the normal one.
--Stealth pistol accomplishes the same thing (assuming you found some way to make it accurate that I didn't) but takes 2X as much shots/ammo to do it.
I really noticed the difference on the escape level where I lost my old (modded) stealth and was using a normal one. To my amazement people died when I shot them in the head! Stupid me went back to his old crappy stealth pistol.....

Can you really prove that enemies can hear the stealth pistol just as well as the normal one? I find that slightly hard to believe.. if it were true why make 2 pistols with different damages, and the same noise?
Thats the main deal here, if others can hear it. I don't mind how loud the pistol can shoot, just as long as it takes the target down with no hassle. But the quirky AI sometimes accomplishes this for me and doesn't acknowledge my firing.

Garboshnik, they'll still react if they see the fellow fall, but a regular pistol shot can send half the troops in a building running for you. There's no comparison on noise level, in my experience. If you screw up with the stealth pistol you might be dealing with three or four, but generally you can pick a whole installation off one by one.
In fact, on my latest replay I had the easiest time yet by far on the "you've been captured" scenario because this time I made a beeline for my stealth pistol in the armory instead of trying to take on the bot repair facility and the nanotech lab with the standard issue.
Hee hee, even found a use for the little one-shot plasma pistol. I used it to "knock" on the armory door because I didn't have the code (having skipped the opportunity to get it this time). The guard at the desk in the armory first sets off an alarm and then opens the door for me. Who says chivalry is dead? ;)
If you have an easier time of it with the standard pistol, though, more power to you. Use that. Just goes to show what this game can do in the way of tailoring itself to individual tastes. :)

Yeah, but when I play any game I always wonder if I'm playing it "incorrectly" and I just want to hear how others play it. So in other words I don't know/have any individual tastes.

In my personal experience the only truly stealthy weapon is the stun prod. Anything else will trigger nearby guards. As for the rest of the guns you might as well be using the GEP for all the difference the supposed noise is.

Well, then, our experiences are so vastly different that one has to wonder if we're playing the same game. Curious. :)
Oh well. :)

I found myself wasting far too much ammo with the Stealth Pistol as it just doesn't do enough damage. Also, even on 100% accuracy, bullets were still missing their targets when I was sitting still, camping, as it were, which didn't happen with the normal pistol.
I think that if I played again, I'd use the Pistol and Crossbow/silenced Sniper Rifle for stealth.
