+5 to Phatose. lost_soul, why don't you go listen to your downloaded copies of Rage Against the Machine albums and leave thoughtful discussion about DRM/Steam/fraud/unsavoury resellers/carp preparation/lalalala to the adults?

I have to laugh at the fact that you backed up your point with a link that states 'The first-sale doctrine as it relates to computer software is an area of legal confusion'.

The software industry has been trying to squash the First Sale Doctrine for at least the past twenty years. They've already put chinks in the armor with the whole "no renting your disks" BS. Their goal is to remove our rights gradually so that no one makes a fuss or opposes them. This is the reason for the confusion.
In the future, I imagine they will squash the rental/resale of console games by arguing the following:
*Everyone knows a console game is "software"...
*It is also easy to argue that a console is a computer. Hell, I can plug a USB keyboard into it and install Linux on the PS3.
Conclusion: console games are computer software.

Actually, Sony tried to argue just that for tax purposes in the EU. It didn't work.

Is it possible to make a new steam account as you buy each game? It'd make selling your unwanted game/s easier...

While I agree that sometimes Armacham felt like Umbrella, I kept playing because the game was enjoyable and delightfully fucked up, especially the closer you got to the crater. And I don't agree that the gameplay wasn't as good as the original- it was a little easier, maybe but with a Nintendo Hard game like FEAR 1 was that's actually a bit of a blessing.
That and the big underground rail fight towards the end with 500 Replica troops was a lot of fun and felt like the old game all over again. I wouldn't say the graphics were more cartoony, though- it's still pretty much the same engine as the original game, hell it even uses some of the same
assets.
The story wasn't
quite as good as the original, but then again it was less about Alma and more about Beckett. At least it wasn't like Condemned 2. C2's story made me scream in frustration.
FEAR 2 :(:(:(
Fuck that game was a disappointment. I mean, it was still fun, but it was mindless fun. The first game's combat was so intense and satisfying that I still go back to it on a regular basis (it's some of the most enjoyable singleplayer shooter gameplay EVER made). There was just so much lost potential with the second game.
Wasn't a fan of the graphics or the art direction at all, too drab and monotone, which can sometimes work (I liked it quite a bit in Gears of War), but it needs to be heavily stylized if they go that route.
Oh, and Condemned 2's story was hilarious. It's very obvious that it never took itself seriously, though. Suicide bombing dolls? BEAR ATTACK?! That game was good fun.

I'm starting to think that I'm the only person capable of enjoying a game on its own merits.

You can still enjoy a game while still being disappointed with it. Like I said, I enjoyed my rental of FEAR 2 and it was some good mindless fun, but I came away from it with little, unlike the first game which has stayed with me.

See, I thought it was very nearly as good as the original- and in some ways better. So I have a hard time wrapping my brain around the idea that it's somehow "mindless fun."
