Because an OS and a single program are very different things.
If you need to call someone to free up activations for a game, it's a minor inconvenience. If you have to do it in order to use your PC, it's a pain in the ass. :D

Except now when my retarded uni blocks steam meaning I dont have access to any of my games
I can understand having restrictive firewalls on university networks, but that's a bit much.

What if the support number is non-toll free or an international toll call? When it's costing you an arm and a leg by the minute, I'd hardly call it a "minor inconvenience". If you're trying to reactivate a professional product that's part of an expensive suite or something, it might be acceptable, but a fucking game? Yeah nah.

If you think that's bad, I know for a fact that the student accommodation near one of this city's colleges has everything including Steam blocked. Not quite sure how student-unfriendly accommodation like that can really be called student accommodation, though.

I suppose you could pay for a VPN out, if they don't block VPN access.

PS I'm recommending the above pack (£3.99)
Spectromancer is pretty awesome (you can try the free demo first if you aren't sure. Think Magic The Gathering, but without the collectable bit)and Bob came in pieces seems fun too(Space-ship design based puzzler!). The other games aren't really anything to write home about, but £3.99 for 2 games isn't bad!

No idea, I haven't paid more than 10 cents for a phone call in 15 years or something. I was mostly using the "operating system" example because pretty much everytime I reinstall Windows or upgrade a piece of hardware the activation system locks me out of my PC and I have to call them for activation verification. I've never had to do that for any other software, nor do I really expect to.

Somehow, the USA managed to avoid the per-minute billing of all phone calls, as is present in other parts of the world. I guess they had enough competition from different providers that anyone attempting to bring in full per-minute billing would have been committing corporate suicide, whereas in countries like Ireland where there was only one telephone provider at the time, they could do whatever they wanted.

And most of our land-line systems have free international calls, too.

You missed out. They had Cryostatis on sale just a few days ago.

Wow. Current deals are good if you missed some classic series out. Jedi Knight, Hitman, Stalker. If I had the time...
