Far Cry 2 is ace. The HUD and 1st person interactions are 2nd to none. My only complaint is the checkpoints. The gameplay and the great missions, HUGE map, transit system (bus), and excellent fierce gunplay with the option to use a bit of stealth to get a nice drop on the enemy all add up to a winner in my book. Also, the foliage physics are insane. Hell, the graphics are primo all-around.

If Far Cry 2 had even a tiny amount of moddability - just a few variables that users could change even - it'd be a perfectly tweaked and balanced game by now. It's a real shame that Ubisoft hate gamers so much.

I don't know what it is about FarCry2 but I just can't get enthused enough to play it.
Crysis on the other hand...

Well I know what it is. It's putting enemies at every god damn checkpoint everywhere not even minutes after you cleared it.
And while in SoC you could avoid all the respawning garbage usually by going the longer route it's not really possible in Far Cry 2 since without a car it takes AEONS to get anywhere.
The only playable part of FC2 is the tutorial.

I felt the respawning checkpoints really weren't as bad as I'd been led to believe. Just look at the map before you go somewhere and you can figure out the path of least resistance, be it by car, boat, or bus. Usually a combination of the three.

Yeah, I didn't find the respawning too bad either. In fact, I don't really remember enemies respawning 'not even minutes after you cleared it'; they do respawn, yes, but it seemed much longer than that to me. Then again, I played the game fully patched, and I believe they adjusted the respawn rates in one of the patches.
All in all, I found the game pretty excellent for the most part - gunplay and atmosphere are very good, and the general feeling of hopelessness as you progress through the story is highly appropriate (and nicely understated) for a game set in a war-torn African country, imo.
However, there's two things that hold the game back somewhat, primarily due to the designers' reluctance to move away from the established FPS template too much, I guess:
1. The fact that everyone at the checkpoints immediately considers you an enemy even without you attacking them first.
2. The fact there are no skirmishes to be seen between the two factions that are supposedly at war over this country.
I don't think these two things could be fixed by tweaking just a few variables, although I don't know. As they say in Deus Ex: What a shame.
Also, the assassination and convoy interception side missions are tacked on and shit.

So in my biggest Steam splurge so far, I came out with three (3) new games: Clear Sky, Call of Pripyat, and F.E.A.R. (plus expansions). Just finished downloading Clear Sky due to the internet being stupid (and maybe due to me being in Australia), and I'm really enjoying the first half hour. Repeatedly, 'cause I keep forgetting to save.

Can someone gift me The Ball on Steam please? I am flat broke. It is $4.99 for 7 more hours. I can repay you in a couple weeks on payday. Thanks!

The game is far far better if you skip the side missions.

Interesting, as some of my strongest memories of Far Cry 2 were in the assassination and ambush missions. Seemed to exemplify the game's style of simple rules leading to emergent mini-narratives.
FC2 was very underrated and probably my favourite single-player game since Deus Ex. I also think that Clint Hocking has some very intelligent commentary on game design in his writings and lectures.
