You know Yakoob, I think you're onto something there.
Not an exclusive (come on, imagine the riots!) but HL3 bundles would help these sell no end.
And isn't it different because Steam OS will have less overheads than Steam on another OS?
henke on 8/1/2014 at 07:20
IIRC Valve already said there won't be any SteamOS exclusives.
Yakoob on 8/1/2014 at 07:32
Aye, the "lack of overhead" would be a boost, but consoles already got that perk so while nice it's not a complete deal-breaker imho. And I *think* we are reaching a point where pure processing power is no longer as important, if the upsurge of not-great-looking-but-clever-and-fun indie titles is an indication.
henke - interesting. But then Valve also said they're release Episode 3 like 5 years ago :p tho they probably wouldn't backpedal on the exclusive promise quite as easily. But a smart bundle, like NuEffect said, could still be a big deal breaker.

The cheapest offering for $500 is fairly enticing, but at the same time I feel like I may be able to put together a better machine for less.

I don't see HL3 being an exclusive. For starters, that's not at all something they'd do, it sort of goes against the grain of what we already know about them. For seconders, it wouldn't be practical, because Steam OS is basically Debian Linux anyway -- anyone could just put it on their PC and play it that way. And really, it's true -- the Steam boxes are pretty much just rebranded PCs configured for use as consoles (which is basically what every console since the Xbox1 has been, just with less proprietary bullshit.)
I can definitely see it being a launch title, though.

I don't see why I would be getting a Steambox with the info available. My biggest gripe comes down to the fact that I already have Steam on my PC, so I can play those games I could with Steambox already. So if I wanted something for my living room, I would probably go for PS4 or Xbone, since they will have many good and some great exclusives for them.

I don't understand who the target market is. These are more expensive than comparable consoles so I can't see it appealing to that market, but hardcore gamers tend to build their own PCs rather than buy prebuilt. And, correct me if I'm wrong, but being locked into a Linux-derived OS means that non-Linux-compatible AAA titles are a no-go anyways.
What does it offer over the alternatives?

Remains to be seen. Keep in mind a lot of people said the same thing about a lot of Apple's products, but then Valve's marketing department lacks the ability to zombify people the way Apple's can.

That was pretty much TotalBiscuits conclusion as well, and an excellent point.
I still have the old tingling feeling somehow find will find a way to make these stand out and win in the end. Tony's apple's comparison is a good point too...
Never underestimate the power of marketing.

Yeah, I'll be getting a PS4 as well. I still hope the Steamboxes will be a success though. Wouldn't mind picking up a cheap model in a few years so I can easily play stuff from my huge Steam library on the TV.
