You're such a toad Eva.
Why do you have to be such a dick? The article is less than a year old.

It's ok, I have an inbuilt filter which accounts for individuals' temperaments allowing me to just take into account the information they're putting across.
Eva - I'm just showing (indirectly) from the horse's mouth why Valve may have set this whole thing into motion. Perhaps the app store didn't end up as restricted as Newell suspected, but they pressed on anyway to protect against restrictive O/S environments in future? If you've got better ideas, roll them out - my mind isn't made up.
[EDIT] Also Eva - can you tell me what's good about W8.1? I have no idea about it and hear a lot of people slagging it off for various reasons, so would be interested to hear the pros.

Please post factual links which show that future Windows versions will have more restrictive aspects. Most reports I've read point to Windows Threshold addressing popular criticisms of the Windows 8 family; and MS possibly just rebranding the thing as Windows 9 rather than Windows 8.2 to move away from a brand with poisoned mindshare. Even then the aforementioned is (
http://www.tomshardware.com/news/microsoft-threshold-windows-8-windows-9-windows-phone,25735.html) all just unconfirmed rumours from "insider sources".
(
http://www.foxnews.com/tech/2013/12/27/pc-makers-plan-rebellion-against-windows-at-ces-analysts-say/) Industry analysts reckon we might see Android come to desktop as a relevant alternative to Windows... now there's an OS that you FAR MORE legitimately make a case for having a "curated garden" than anything desktop Windows related.

See some pros of Win 8 below.

Calling Windows 8 a fluke mistake by MS? That's something a bystander who hasn't actually used OS for a decent amount of time would say. It's literally an iteratively better version of Windows 7.
Ultra-fast bootup times
Search is near instantaneous because ALL FILES AND FOLDERS are indexed by default.
Increased usability in the desktop UI (eg Ribbon UI for File Explorer)
Smaller memory footprint
A much needed overhauled of the file copying systems (making 3rd party solutions like TeraCopy mostly redundant)
A new and improved Task Manager
Storing of your Windows settings in the cloud
You can do a "factory settings reset". This mean that you no longer have to complete reinstall Windows to remove gradual detritus build-up.
Etc.
Yes, the Metro UI is an absolute failure with mouse pointing interface devices. I rarely ever see the thing though, to the point I had completely forgotten that it existed until I saw screenshots of the Xbox One UI today. Pinning your most used apps to the Superbar is the natural thing to do, no different to Win 7. I've used Stardock's Start8 since day 1, which boots me directly to the desktop UI.
(RE: Xbox One. With Kinect being a standard requirement, Metro might actually work here, since hand waving is Touch screen-esque. )
8.1 vs. 8 however? It's a glorified Service Pack really, but since it goes to extent of making adjustments to the kernel it's more comparable to say what Win 95 OSR2 and Win 98 SE were. 8.1 mostly improvements to Metro UI which I don't really care about since I don't use the Metro UI. I've noticed that Start key + Q and Start key + W shortcuts are now Snap panes rather than being Metro Start screen shit which takes over the entire desktop, a really nice change.

There was no ad hominem in my post. You guys need to move away from this "YOU USED SOME ADJECTIVES SO THUS YOU'RE A MEANIE!!!111" shtick already. It's not my failing if someone can't handle bluntness (actually in my former academic lives I was praised for this quality on many occasions by faculty).

Dude, you're known for being a dick like this. That first line was totally unnecessary.
This is why no one engages with you, why you're never, ever involved in any normal discussions.
Yeah, I got the date wrong. Still not ancient.
I'm out.
EvaUnit02 on 23/1/2014 at 14:39
By IT industry standards 1.5 years is indeed ancient.
I can fully sympathise with your POV however, we know that that the medical industry moves at the speed of glaciers. Trying to compare the two is the epitome of apples to oranges.

Not everyone is here for Debate Club or an academic argument or whatever. People have thresholds for what they're willing to tolerate in what's meant to be a friendly discussion of videogames - and this is a factor independent of who's more right or who's got a bigger stash of links on hand or whatever - and so, yes, bluntness can be a failing as much as thin skins.
(commendable of faetal for tuning it out and putting up with you, of course).

I've been hearing a lot of goof things about linux lately. Seems it's not just a neckbeard thing these days. Maybe he's right, maybe linux + games could be a genuine contender for windows. Either way, real competition is a good thing as it will force everyone to up their game considerably.
I just now came back to Windows Land after spending 6 months in Linux. When I first tried out Ubuntu back in, I think, '09 or so, I found it to be kinda clunky and overly convoluted. It was only an alternative for people who absolutely loathe Windows and OSX, or took FOSS as a religious mandate. Personally, I couldn't stand it.
But my last trip with ElementaryOS and Ubuntu Gnome? There's still some fiddling you have to do here and there, but it was a helluva lot better than what it was. The Linux community is finally starting to understand that not everyone wants to spend 500 hours googling up obscure commands to get basic crap done, and spending a little extra time making sure everything is nice, smooth, pretty, and most importantly, consistent, is a good thing to do. Really, the major reason why I jumped back is because GIMP fucking sucks, and I wanted my Photoshop. If anyone ever tells you they're comparable, you punch them in their goddamn lying neck.
Oh, and Netflix. You have to go through a small section of hell to get Netflix working in Linux.

Eva - wind your neck in a bit - I was wasn't posting "proof" of MS or W8 being malevolent, I was posting a link which might explain why Valve are branching out and possibly looking to avoid being locked in if Windows goes down that route. It's old because Valve's decision to make its own OS and machines is about as old.
Those points about W8 sound ok. I ask mainly because I'm thinking of switching to a powerful laptop as my main PC and W8 tends to come as standard these days.
For the record, I don't mind when people are blunt - it's better than people holding back, but that's most likely because I can be fairly blunt myself. That said, it can come across a little silly if it's past what's necessary.

Eva, remember what I said to you about tone? Just because you used no ad hominems doesn't mean there isn't a super hostile tone to your posting style that puts people off. I mean, look at the second line in your response to Subjeff. Was that really necessary?
