Steam sharing beta. Exactly what it says on the tin - by Phatose

There's a rumour that the Friday announcement (or part of it, anyway) is going to be Source Engine 2, and that it's 100% OpenGL, without a single line of DirectX or other Windows specific code. Grain of salt, obviously, since today's announcement seemed to imply that Friday was going to be about the controller. But Valve coming out and showing that they can get next-gen eye candy without touching DirectX should provide a pretty big kick in the ass to other devs to start working on their OpenGL implementations.

There's already been a big kick in the ass. Metro Last Light is the current PC showcase title, and it's already running natively in OpenGL on Macs, and is coming around November for Linux. Alongside that, Epic is setting it up so UDK 4 can port to Linux, and they might be backporting UDK3. Unity already does, hence why just about every indie title out at the moment is showing up in my Steam Linux library.
Source2 being entirely OGL based would only be icing on the cake.

Valve's weird use of multiples of 3 in the latest of their three announcements hasn't escaped people.
"The nearly 3,000 games on Steam. Hundreds already running natively on the SteamOS, with more to come. The rest will work seamlessly via in-home streaming."
"This year we're shipping just 300 of these boxes to Steam users, free of charge, for testing. You can make yourself eligible to get one. How? Read on!"
"A small number of users (30 or less) will be chosen based on their past community contributions and beta participation. The remainder will be chosen at random from the eligible pool."
This leads me to believe Friday's big announcement might involve the third installment in the venerable PEGGLE series.
[edit] I have just been informed there was no Peggle 2, so my prediction is now null.

Looks like we'll be getting Left 4 Dead 3 soon, everyone! :D

Lol.
I saw the hardware announcement coming. After all, in my mind, it only made sense after announcing SteamOS. Will be interesting to see who picks up a license and how it's used to make one of these boxes.
I've no idea what their third announcement will be, but for some reason I doubt it will be an announcement about Source Engine 2 being completely OpenGL based. Well, other than what someone already said that it will be about a controller for their machine.
Also, I gotta ask, Renz, what's your Location about?:weird:

Other than not being able to immediately port games to the Xbone or SurfaceRT, there aren't any disadvantages to choosing OpenGL over DX. It wouldn't be a huge shock if Valve went this route, at least at first.

Pretty much what it says. Whores and Dinosaurs. :P

Sure there are. OpenGL's tool-chain isn't as evolved or developer-friendly as DirectX's, because the OpenGL committee's been slow to act on feedback, unlike Microsoft. I know that's sort of amazing, but it's the truth. That said, Source 2's probably going to be OpenGL based, because Valve will have to put their money where their mouth is if they want to show how they're leading the anti-Microsoft charge.

You have a funny way of spelling "Half-Life 3," Yakoob.

You keep looking at this like it's an actual console when it's not. It's a PC. [snip]
Hmm, I guess it depends on how you look at it. In your words, then, it's more of a PC-replacement and competition against MS and OSes, rather than consoles directly. That does make it sound much more beneficial and cooler than what I was complaining against and, indeed, as a dev, very exciting. But they still seem to be marketing it a bit more as XOne and PS4 equivalent with the whole "hijacking livingroom, game-focused, steam gamepad" angle, so it comes off as a new console.
But then again, the lines have been blurring more and more in the past few years, so PCs/Consoles/TVs/Media Centers slowly merging into one, and I guess SteamOs/Box/Pad is valve's attempt at that final push eh?
