Crates...now that you mention it those crate textures do look sharper. Using the original DeusEx.exe from the latest patch restored the CD check for me so I went with the Steam DeusEx.exe. So the patch does work afterall. I was a bit confused since I saw the screenshots of retextured Paul, JC, Anna on the homepage but never in the game.
Thanks for the links. I´ll try that out if I find the time. I used to enjoy hacking my way to a increased visual experience but since I don´t find too much time for playing anymore, I just want to install a game and start without fiddling around in ini-files and stuff.

Use this ULTIMATE CRACKING TECHNIQUE to eliminate the disc check:
Open up the default.ini and deusex.ini files and change the CdPath value to "..\" without the quotes.
Edit: I understand your sentiment for reducing the need for dabbling in the ini files and guides on how to dabble in ini files. So here's how you do things you need to get New Vision to work:
1. Patch it up with 1112fm if you haven't already: (
http://ftp.eidos.co.uk/pub/uk/deus_ex/patches/DeusExMPPatch1112fm.exe)
2. (
http://www.cwdohnal.com/utglr/dxglr21.zip) - The OpenGL renderer, overwrite the files in the system dir with it. (the guides point to an earlier vesion, which didn't work for me)
3. (
http://www.moddb.com/mods/deus-ex-new-vision/downloads/deus-ex-new-vision-public-beta) Download New Vision and drop all the .utx files in 2009-03-27-NewVision.1.zip in your DeusEx/Textures/ folder, overwrite when prompted. Ignore the OpenGL/ folder. --Open up DeusEx.ini and find the group [OpenGLDrv.OpenGLRenderDevice]. Under it, add the line: UseS3TC=True
4. Make sure you're using the OpenGL renderer.
It should work now. The difference should be pretty obvious. Make a save in the training mission or Liberty Island and compare and contrast.

I saw the dreaded words 'arcade racer' mentioned somewhere above, so might I mention another Steam sale game?
(
http://store.steampowered.com/app/42640/) Blur from the now-dead Bizarre Creations is a fun, power-up based racing game. I'm generally not a fan of any driving game that isn't by Geoff Crammond or called HiOctane or Wipeout, but Blur has been amusing me on PS3 quite a bit recently and for a sale price you might want to check it out too.

Oh right... I checked FUEL(which sucked) and Split/Second(Which sucked), but I forgot about Blur. What's with this fallout of arcade racers

NFS: Hot Pursuit is supposed to be pretty good and it's $17.99 today as part of the NFS franchise sale. Not my kind of racer so I can't offer an opinion, but my friends seem to like it.

and some crates, barrels
That reminds me of... +17.8 internets to those who remember what "Stc" measurement unit stands for ;)

START TO CRATE. I think almost everyone on ttlg would remember that. :)
Only Chet/Erik would make a game where the protaganist's only friend is a crate.
