Well, what d'ya know?
Not only did I just get a Tomb Raider trading card for buying a game on Steam, I also realised I still have a gift copy of Secret of Monkey Island that I never gave away. If anyone fancies either of them PM me.

Oh God, Matthew gifted me that first game years ago and I actually played it for hours....
Game of the decade.

They did it years ago, in the form of TF2 hats.
The thing about hats is that if you wear a hat, people can see you wearing that hat. If you see yourself from third person, you can even seen yourself wearing the hat. And the hat might look nice, such a black fireman's helmet, perhaps.
But a badge on a profile page that no one ever looks at? It just seems beyond pointless. It's like buying really expensive wallpaper to put on the inside of your wardrobe, where you rarely look, and even if you did, wouldn't see because your clothes are in the way.
Now, it does seem that if you happen to collect the cards and craft a badge, you get a random discount voucher, probably for things that would be on sale anyway, or for things you wouldn't want to buy even if they were.
I am now the proud owner of a 50% off
Sniper Elite: Nazi Zombie Army!
Sadly, I can't put this valued prize up on the market for other people to spend their hard-earned cash on it.

Well, I decided that I will probably never really care about Steam badges enough to get involved with trading cards, so I put all of mine up for sale. I used the maximum price that each had sold for across its history (ignoring big outliers) and they all sold within a few days. I now have the princely sum of £2.95 in my Steam wallet. For the next ones, I'm going to try selling them 1p higher than the maximum and see how it affects the sale.

You can get some nice stuff that sells for a fair bit ($20+) when you get a whole pack of cards, on occasion. Gained 2 such items so far, though neither has sold.

I don't get these cards.

They're vanity items for people who have bought in to the gamification of Steam. You get them for buying things and playing games, but you need to have a whole set in order to make a badge, which you can then display on your profile. I think you can get bigger badges too made up of smaller ones. Basically, you can't get a whole set (I think) just from buying your game and playing it, you need to also trade with other people, or buy them from the marketplace. Because some people want these badges, either to sell on or to add to their trophy cabinet (It's no different really to the football sticker albums from a UK childhood, except far less cool). So yeah, people who dgaf like me can just put the cards on sale so that people who do can spend small amounts to improve their collection and then lord it over their friends.
