So how about that Steam update eh? Quite something!
Anyway here's a suggestion! Let's make a
Looking Glass Studios Legacy curated store. We'll list all the LGS games on Steam (all 3 of them!), we can all submit blurbs on each of the games and then vote on which one should go on the page. Then we can also list LGS inspired games like yer Bioshocks and Arkane Studios games and whatnot.
Creating a curated page is done by first creating a group (
http://steamcommunity.com/groups/ttlg-kru) WHICH WE HAVE, and then somehow creating a curated store out of that. Don't ask me for specifics I'm just the BIG IDEAS GUY here ok, you guys work out the details.

That's indeed what I'm talking about! And I'm pretty sure anyone who hasn't LIVED UNDER A ROCK* for the past 14 hours knows what I'm talking about.
*or otherwise not checked the gaming news of the day.

The Steam client's new UI is quite refreshing and the option of "curated storefronts" and recommendations based on your gameplay history should help the Steam store's increasing discoverability ailments for indie devs but...
The feature to force Steam games to not patch up is gone. 90% this isn't an issue I'd say, why wouldn't you want the "latest and greatest" version of a game? However there are the rare occasion where the newest version does something dumb like break compatibility with mods; remove certain features; etc. Those are the times when disabling updating was a welcome option.

While I've never had Steam overwrite .exe's or mods or whatever, and I've always just left it at "keep my game up to date", if it did I'd be pissed considering how many games on Steam don't work without significant modifications.
Steam curation and 'games recommended for you' is fucking stupid. Just show me all the new releases, games on sale, upcoming games, etc without making me jump through goddamn hoops, or at least give me the option to turn all that fucking filtering off.
Finally, how the fuck is TotalBiscuit the most popular curator by an exponential margin. Yes, let this completely stereotypical british jackass who flails away at games with no fucking idea of what he's doing filter games for me. Sounds like a great goddamn idea.

He only filters games for you if you choose to follow him. Relax.
But yes, I'd love the option to see new releases and specials right away.

Yes, I realize that. Hence my wondering why he's the most popular curator on Steam by an EXPONENTIAL margin.
Edit: Ok, maybe not exponential, but still, he has like 3x the followers of the next most popular curator. And he's basically the most pure representation of every ass-backwards I-think-I'm-hardcore-but-really-I'm-mainstream-casual-as-fuck PC gamer ever.

He does competent first impressions videos similar to the Giantbomb's Quick Look series that are a good resource if you want to get an idea what the game(play) looks like. Most of them are indie games that don't often get good coverage, so he's basically the go-to guy for a lot of people who want to know about a game.
And hardcore PC gamers are actually a very tiny sliver of gamers. Most are filthy mainstream-as-f*ck casuals who play a little Assassin's Creed here, a little Skyrim there.

What is shown on the storefront can be customised. Hover the cursor over to find the "Customize" button.

Thanks a bunch I had no idea you could do that! That completely fixes the way the front page no longer lets you see all of the new releases, upcoming games, or specials in scrollable tabs. I have no idea why you would REMOVE useful functionality when rolling out a new website. Hell, you can't even filter out DLC when looking at new releases if you decide to click on the "show all new releases" link. You used to be not only be able to do that from the front page, but also scroll through the most recent 100 releases sorted by date.
It's great you can customize all those boxes at the top that I have never looked at anyway because they're just goddamn ads. When I load up store.steampowered.com, I look for the weeklong deals/midweek deals/weekend deals section, the daily deal w/ timer, and then immediately go down to the tabs at the bottom and scroll through what's new/upcoming/popular/etc depending on what I'm looking for if anything. That's assuming I load the Steam homepage at all, since it's always been (and continues to be) easier to find things through a site like savygamer, isthereanydeal, steam sales tracker, or steamgamesales if I just want an overview of current deals. Otherwise I just want to be able to scroll through the new releases/upcoming releases.
