Do you have a ton of profile backgrounds filling up your Steam inventory? Are there a ton of emotes just wasting away unused and unloved? Do you have a couple of trading cards you just can't seem to get rid of even if you try to give them away?
Fear not, for this year Valve will let you convert these wastes of space into a special currency (Gems) you can use to bid on games and other stuff. To get access to this visit (
http://steamcommunity.com/auction) (also accessible via the "Learn more here" link found in the Steam Inventory description of each item that can be converted) and see if something you desire is up for grabs.

Apparently it's already been canceled.
Not cancelled, but there was an issue Thursday which caused them to reset the status of any Gem related transaction along with all auctions. It is now Friday/Saturday (depending on where you live), so any issues should be resolved at this time.

Yeah, I just figured that out and deleted my post, but not before you replied :)
Kinda wish I could donate games from my library that I never intend to play, even if I get nothing for it...

I'll leave my post up as a pre-emptive strike against anyone else who may make the same misconception.

Interestingly, my normal cards with value £0.06 are worth 4 gems, and my 2013 summer sale getaway cards also at £0.06 are 20 gems.
Arma 3 costs £35.99. If I bought it with gems from my normal cards it would take 2399. With getaway sale cards it would cost 11,996 gems. Current bid for a copy of Arma 3 is over 19,000 gems.
I'm curious about how they're doing this (I only have a tiny view of their system), but no doubt they're going to make a killing.

Am I just completely misunderstanding this? Civilization: Beyond Earth currently has a highest bid of 70,000 gems. If I had bought it with my (£0.06 = 4 gems) cards that would price the game at £1050. Even with £0.42 = 200 gems it costs more than £100.

It only seems worth it if for some reason you have a lot of low value items that give a huge amount of gems.

Many of the (common) background pictures are sold for 0.03€ in the marketplace while being worth 80 Gems when converted, that's how those games become worth that much. Note that some are "only" worth 20 Gems when converted.
This means that Civ:BE for 70k Gems is close to 26.25€.

Whenever the 'sack of gems' item was listable on the marketplace, people were selling it for 3 cents. That's 1000 gems for 3 cents. According to the auction page you're still supposed to be able to buy/sell/trade gem sacks but it appears to be disabled at the moment. Whenever it's enabled again I fully intend on using the $3 in my steam wallet to buy a bunch of those, turn them into booster packs, sell the booster packs, then buy more gems with the money from that.

Maybe that's why they turned it off, lol.

AFAIK they turned it off because of duping, but who knows. I have enough gems to put a bid in for Silent Storm 2, although frankly I'd be ok just paying for it with actual money in a sale.
