Strange Bedfellows - missed the chat with the Hammer. - by 5tephe

Hey all - funny little problem that I'm sure one or two of you will have encountered before now, but I couldn't find a mention of it in a search or two, so here goes:
I have descended through the catacombs (after having injured one of the Insect-Beasts, so I have the extra objective of Killing them all).
I have now descended into the deeper catacombs, and dealt with the apeman on the walkways configured like a cross in between the four 'stations of the elements'.
So, while on the walkway, I decided to stay hidden and deal with the Insect-Beasts below.
In doing so, all the ruckus I caused seemed to 'wake up' the Hammers in their inaccessible hiding place lower down and to the north. I distinctly heard the sounds of their 'battle' with an Apeman or two that follows immediately after the Hammer gives you his little speech and the map, key and new objectives.
However, when I go down to the hidey hole, those items aren't there, I don't have the new objectives, and I can't make him give me the speech, no matter how much I jump up and down. So I'm kinda stuck.
Has this happened to you before?
Is there any recourse other than going back to a previous save point and making less noise?
Am I completely stuffed, because I only had one save point and wrote over it AFTER I made all the ruckus?
Do I have to re-play the mission?

If you didn't get the key, you're screwed. I don't know why the items weren't there. There are two doors, at least one, you need to unlock and lockpicks, explosives, or bashing won't help.

A few possibilities:
1. You didn't wait long enough, it often takes the hammer a while to show up.
2. He said the speech and you missed it, in which case remember that there are two possible windows the stuff is at, make sure you check both.
3. The fight started early and the hammer got killed, best bet in this case would be a reload/start
4. It's a pure bug. Not much to do but restart.

You did take the spiral staircase at the side of the pit and go down to the window?
The front window in the pit is not the right one.

Yeah, I've checked both windows (the Northern, more hidden one is where I expect to find it), hung around for ages, pulled out a fire arrow and stood in the light and jumped up and down.... Nobody notices me.
I think perhaps you are right, Stealth MIA: he got killed in the fight (careless bastard.)
And as I saved after I heard the fight, I guess I'm just going to have to re-start the mission. Sigh.
So, for those of you who have had a look at the level in DromEd - how does it work in there? Just out of interest. Is it just a little cul-de-sac, with Hammers wandering randomly? Where do the attackers come from, and what are they triggered by? I always assumed that it was a scripted thing, halfway through the Hammer's speech, but obviously I found a way to precipitate that attack. Just wondering.

It's their last little stronghold. In the room with them is an invisible Apebeast (labeled "BeastStooge") that is just standing there until the Hammerite finishes talking, and then suddenly all the Hammers become aware of the Apebeast and the fight occurs. This is why you can never see the creature. The Hammerite that stands at the window and waits for you to approach is called "Takeout Guy", as in ordering take-out food at the drive-in window. :laff: The map and key appear in the window on the thick stone.
The fiction: While they are taking refuge, locked in their small room, they wait for you to bring them their High Priest and the Builder's Chisel, so they can revive him and vanquish their foes, taking back their Temple under siege. After they've done so, they work with Garrett to take on the Trickster, make the replica of The Eye, find passages in their oldest writings to help you, and continue fighting the stream of beasts coming through the portal. When Con makes his final move, the Keepers tell you the Trickster's gone down into The Maw to begin his ritual, and they give you the map and a passage from their old books.
Somehow you were spotted by the Take Out Guy. His window is hammer-shaped and intact at the bottom of a spiral stair. The other window is a hole through crumbled wall adjacent to a pit. The third window, which requires the key to meet the objectives, is also an intact hammer-shape, and is near the underground stream, and is where you meet the final main objective.
