I noticed something odd on Windows 7 (I assume Vista is the same) when I hover my mouse over the Thief 2 icon in the Games folder (a special system folder that downloads fancy icons and info (esrb, sys reqs.) directly from Microsoft.)
Does anyone know where that text comes from? It looks like a fanfiction, which would be an odd thing to put as the official product description. The text for Thief 1 reads like a wikipedia entry (it's not, though) and cuts off just like this one does.
Edit: It seems that it was written by Chris Couper from "All Game Guide" ((
http://www.allgame.com/)) ... still seems like an odd thing for MS to use. I wonder if we could get it changed to something a little more succinct and to the point. The full text can be found here...

Whoa! Cool find, if inappropriate. I take it it's a similar thing to Windows Media Player searching online for track and album information when loading a CD? It would be good if the user could make a better suggestion.

Quite interesting. It's probably an auto detect feature which activated when you installed the game, MS probably had a team check for online descriptions of games and picked the one which they liked best for it. Also, I can confirm that Vista does not have the description.

Pandora uses All Music Guide for its descriptions and artist/album bios, which I guess is similar to All Game Guide. There are some real inaccuracies in some of their info, as well as some just plain terribly written bios, but I guess Pandora has to get their info from somewhere and doesn't have the resources to create their own database.
By comparison, in Vista I don't get that, only basic file info:
