You're also missing an important part of the equation which is that the retailers are not the same as the people making the game. Yes, the game may retail for $60, but the retailer bought it for $25 and it cost $10 per copy to develop.
There's still a load of money in there, but you have to consider every slice of the pie.

According to this interesting article (
http://www.costik.com/weblog/2007/02/are-retailers-actually-screwed.html)
the retailer may have payed up to 48 dollars for a $60 game. This actually explains a lot about the way games are priced and why there is such a huge used market. Pretty strange relationship if you ask me.

I've always thought games were way overpriced. Sometimes I wonder how companies making the B and C level titles even make it. Not many people can go around buying 20-30 games every year at the $60 level.
I remember buying Thief 2 for $40, that seemed very fair at the time. Considering how cheap it is to reproduce discs, I'm surprised more companies aren't in the the same line of thinking as dethtoll where a drop in price would dramatically increase sales.

If we're going to use the logic game developers use: the average price of a cinema ticket in the United States is 7 dollars, for approximately two hours of entertainment.
So for a video game costing 60 dollars to be of comparable value, it needs to offer around 17 hours of gameplay. Most halfway decent releases offer a fair bit more than this.

I think that type of logic is faulty. Movie length is an absolute, whereas I just played Call of Duty 4 (on normal), and it was a great game, but the single player campaign only took me about 5 hours, and I don't play multiplayer. I still had to fork out 60 bucks though (not looking for sympathy, just making a point).

That's exactly why I buy quick games like CoD 4 always from the bin or used. For me the game must be something really special to be worth the 50€ they cost around here.

To be fair, most sane places include sales tax/VAT in prices. ;)
Except here, where almost no-one does. Honestly, I wouldn't mind higher prices if what they advertised was what actually came out of my wallet.
Also, movie tickets for $7? Try 13 here, and that's before tax. Even a short game like Mirror's Edge is a good value if we're talking about hours.

I have a tough time finding patience when it comes to games.
If i had just waited awhile for a lot of my games I would've paid less than half for all the titles i own.
For example. I bought every Fear title for PC when they were first released..
Fear 79.99
XP 39.99
PM 39.99
Fear 2 49.99
=209.96 ...
Now you can buy all fear 1 titles for 15 bucks in a box set. I was going to wait for Fear 2.. but I couldn't.
I loved RE4... but I can wait awhile for RE5.. that one I probably wont pay full price for.
What I hate is when a game wont drop to the price it deserves!!
I would like to play the new Turok.. but I dont want to pay 50 bucks for it. Its been out for over a year and still nobody really cares.. and its still full price.

Capcom are up to their old tricks again, releasing half-arsed expanded games as sequels. Really, why do this sort of shit in the age of DLC? Looks like there's no PC port this time either.
