Author of
L'incal,
Blueberry,
Arzach and several other comics, famous illustrator for sci-fi writers all over the world, one of the founders of
Métal Hurlant, that led to its adaptation in the U.S. known as
Heavy Metal,
Moebius, real name Jean Giraud, died yesterday.
He was, without exaggeration, one of the biggest influences on science-fiction and cyberpunk aesthetics throughout the last quarter of the 20th century until today. The influence of his imaginary, exotic worlds and characters extends even to comic books and films as a whole.

It's a bit silly to be so sad, maybe in part because it coincides with me stopping reading comics, but still, that sucks :(

I remember seeing a Moebius graphic novel at the comic shop when I was in high school, going "Huh? Looks interesting.", buying it, and being instantly addicted. Years later, upon seeing The Fifth Element, I thought to myself that it looked like the film version of a Moebius comic, and it turned out that he did some of the design work.
The Arzach stories were my favorites.

I read Heavy Metal throughout highschool. Somewhere in the attic there are dozens of issues. Much of his art lies within. The stories were always more interesting with his creative backdrop to them. Later on the mag degenerated into softcore porn with no story but he was there for the glory days when it was softcore porn with a story. He had a truely unique style recognizable at once. The world is less without him and my youth has another nail in it's coffin.
Adieux Jean.
