Hi, sorry thought I should make a new thread for this, as it's a very distinct issue I haven't seen mentioned.
I have a visual "stuttering" problem in the game, but it also occurs in the Main Menu and submenus, which might help someone realise what it is. I hope!
It only occurs when I move my mouse over (or out from) one of the menu items - eg. New Game, Load Game, Options, etc. Also happens when mouse move over or out from other buttons like yes/no confirmation buttons, the Options submenu buttons, etc. etc.
Thing is, I can move my mouse around the rest of the screen without any stuttering and all the animations are smooth as silk, so it's not an FPS issue as such. It's just when my mouse moves over something.
Of course when I get into the game, it stutters often, which is why I initially thought it was a normal FPS type issue. But it must be something else.
If anyone has any ideas... thank you!

The thing that immediately occurs to me is that it is a sound problem, because Thief plays a sound whenever you mouse over a menu item. So your soundcard may be the root of the problem; or it could be the hard drive, as Thief may hit the hard drive every time for that sound and/or the mouseover graphic.
It can be hard to diagnose stuttering problems without sound, but if you can see the stuttering as well as hearing it (i.e. the mouse cursor lags momentarily) then try disabling sound entirely and observe if that fixes the stuttering.

Thanks for that! I can see a default.ini in the System folder... do you know which setting disables all sound? It's a HUGE file.
Things I see at first glance:
PlayAmbientSound=1
[Engine.GameEngine]
UseSound=True
[Audio.GenericAudioSubsystem]
UseFilter=True
Use3dHardware=False
Latency=40
[ALAudio.ALAudioSubsystem]
UseDirectSound3D=False
Also in My Documents/Thief../options.ini, there's stuff like:
UseHWMixing=1
UseEAX=2
EAXMultipleEnvironments=2
What should I start with? :wot:

Oh, you were talking about Thief: Deadly Shadows. I assumed you were meaning Thief or Thief II, but the approach would be the same in any case. The first thing to try is to set
UseSound=False
. You may have to set it in your My Documents/blah blah/ ini file instead of in default.ini though to get it to apply.
[Edit:] actually, I'm not sure that diagnosis is relevant to TDS, because I can't remember if there's an option-highlight sound at all.
