The Thief franchise enjoys perhaps one of the greatest fan bases of any PC game. Those are fighting words, but as a fan group we are fighters. Pushing ten years [dizzy] since TDP came out the game is alive and well, ttlg people got the trilogy finished when it might not have, written countless FM's and fan games even, made the mods, a stack of fan fic and art.
Most movie adaptations of video games have sucked royally. There's no denying it. Some here have suggested that with as bad as it has been, perhaps the risk of a thief movie, or movie franchise is not worth it. That's a respectable opinion, I feel that concern, actually could be addressed in another way instead of never making a film. I'll get to that.
I am assuming that as far as Sony is concerned, if we can convince them of the demand, they'll at least consider banking on it, they've toyed with the idea, we might need to unconvince them of whyever they decided not to last time.
I wasn't involved in the petitioning that caused DS to be made.
There are probably a lot of people here infinitely better qualified to take the helm of such an effort. Since I opened my mouth, I'll declare myself willing to kick this off.
I am an optimist. I am also in favor of the idea of a film. I feel it is not enough for us to try and get a film made. We can't tell the film company how to make the movie, but perhaps we could petition that they at least follow the storyline of the game, unlike Tomb Raider, DOOM or a bunch of the other ones.
If, they use the stories from the games, at the worst we'd have a poor execution of the story we know and love, not some kind of "original story set in the universe of". That would indeed be a un-thief joke by the movie industry. So far, the studios have been at great pains to show us gamers how poor they think our taste is.
We all pay good money for games, movie tickets and DVD's. I get my best return right now on games, so I'd like to see more movies written and directed like games, adjusting for the non-interactivity, as much as that is possible.
Yeah my wording is relatively simple at this point. Far be it from me to go off on my own to Sony or whoever if EVERYONE here DOESN'T want this.
But a call to the PR department at Sony is a look up on the net away. I figure I'll find out what type of language they'd like in a proposal. But here is where I start to feel that there are better equipped people here.
What if the film sold and spawned two sequels?
We'd be more likely to see a Thief 4.
We have to keep ourselves fresh as a fan base.
I play FM's every day now, but it is an activity that is going to happen until it ceases. If the movies sell, our numbers as a fan base might double or triple. Maybe.
There's a lot I could say and it could be better worded, I've been thinking about this since they were saying that Toby would play Garrett.
I just figure that if the people of TTLG decided they wanted to start a petition for a thief movie, they could get the right people to listen.
We are a big group. We all have a large number of gamer friends and people who don't really care one bit about thief, but aren't against it either and would sign a petition just to help us out. With our resources...yes we could get ten million signatures.
Floor's open...

I vote for a mini-series . . . SciFi channel? When they started making their original movies they started out pretty well but lately they've been cheesy as hell :p A mini-series would be able to expand on the story line.

I'd be the best choice to play Garrett as I'd also be a kick ass creative consultant.:D

I've seen enough to know that I don't trust the Hollywood studios with any game franchise.
I have a clear notion of what the Thief world is and watching a compromised or even warped interpretation of that will definitely leave a sour taste in my mouth.

Two reasons make me think this is a bad idea:
1. Uwe Boll
2. If a Thief movie actually succeeded and led to a 4th installment of the game, it would very likely be dumbed down to meet lowest common denominator of movie goer/videogame player. Not just dumbed down, WAY dumbed down.
Sorry, but my cup is half empty. ;)

As I hear more opinions, I am made more aware of the relevant issues that are involved in the idea of a Thief movie. My knowledge of the issue is not limitless.
Therefore, I should be as interested in opinions against the idea as those for it. To be unwilling to hear an opposite opinion is an irrational fear of something that is actually beneficial.
This much I know is true, if zeal for the idea cannot be established here at this site, then the task of getting a thief movie made would require one more tenacious than even me.

Theortically, I'd be totally cool with this idea, as long as the entire series ended up on not ridiculously priced DVD's. However I am very nervous about the SciFi channel doing it. I enjoy their productions, but if they aren't low budget, comparatively speaking, they still look very... LowFi.
Two exceptions: First Wave and the new Doctor Who. I got no gripe with those. A mini-series might allow for more accurate renderings of specific parables from the story, but I am concerned about budget, production and almost everything else.

You know what would be really cool? A Thief animated series, done in the same awesome style as the animated and coloured Thief cutscenes.

I second that previous motion: animated movie would be the best route

Be sure to include in your proposal that I should be designated supervising sound editor and chief re-recording mixer and should be paid handsomely for my services.
On a more serious note, the best group of people to write a Thief screenplay are right here. Get on it, gentlemen.
Oh, but no petitions. Write a script and pitch it. That's Hollywood.
