I'm kindasorta interested in Green Lantern but I think for the most part I really couldn't give a shit. There really isn't a lot interesting coming out this year.
There's a few coming out after summer's over though that might be good- Red State and The Thing have my immediate attention.

Fafhrd, did you watch Thor in 3D and if yes, how was it (both the picture quality and the 3D itself)? I heard it was shot in 2D and only after Avatar did they decide to 3Dify it.
2D. I'm pretty sure it was shot 3D, though (or at the very least, shot 2D with the intention of post-converting at the time of shooting). A lot of the wide establishing shots tended to have some active foreground elements, which is the hallmark of a 'whoa, check out this
depth' shot, which you wouldn't get if it was shot 2D and had a 3D post-convert foisted on it by the studio. That said, I've heard that they didn't really do a lot with the 3D, but different people expect different things from 3D, so those complaints may have just been along the lines of 'not enough shots of Thor's hammer flying out of the screen at me,' which is the sort of thing that I generally hate in 3D movies.

I missed
Super 8 in the theatrical run... did people like it?

Cowboys & Aliens ... a definite must-see for me unless it absolutely stinks out the critics.
(
http://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/cowboys_and_aliens/) Oh, right... I'll get me coat then...
Uh... a little delayed but of those that still interest:
Rise of the Planet of the Apes - seeing tonight!
Stupid, Crazy Love - looks ok, Gosling is the new golden god it seems because...
Drive (not on the list) - looks like my must-see movie of the year.
The Change Up - I'll have to put myself through this, the script was burst out laughing funny so I need to see how badly they've fucked this up. I think the key to it all is that they actually needed to switch the roles around to have the different actors play INSIDE their comfort zone. Bateman in Reynolds and Reynolds in Bateman is one of those ideas that sounds good but when you think through the actor's strengths and weaknesses... uh, not so much.
Now that the season is winding to a close and the oscar-bait laden Fall schedule approaches, what did people think of the summer movies? Were there
any decent comic book movies this year - stupid question? Any dissent to the popular-opinion-o-meters for badly rated but worth checking out?

Thor, X-Men First Class, and Captain America were really good to great. Green Lantern was an out and out mess that appeared to be the result of combining two different scripts and then further hacking it to bits in editing.
I quite liked Cowboys and Aliens while seeing it, but it was pretty forgettable overall, which is probably its biggest crime, considering the talent involved.
I'm officially done with Michael Bay after Transformers 3.
Super 8 was pretty 'eh.' It's a lifeless zombie version of an '80s era Spielberg movie. It hits all the same emotional beats, but they feel calculated and robotic instead of organic and character driven.
I'm the guy that likes Pirates 4 (also the guy that likes 2 and 3, so there's that).
Not on the list (and pre-dates 'Summer Movie Season' by a month or so, iirc), but 'Hanna' was fantastic.
Rise of the Planet of the Apes was also pretty great.
And I kind of loved 'Paul.'

WHY DO YOU HAVE TO LIKE PIRATES NOW I CANT TRUST ANYTHING ELSE YOU SAY
God that was a horrible noisy empty mess of a film. I think turbulence forcing me to be buckled into a plane seat was the only reason I sat through that.
Paul was ok but a month or so later and I can barely remember a thing about it.
On a tangental note, glad to see (via twitter) that Wright and Pegg are writing again, hopefully the only result is the final in the Blood and Icecream Trilogy.
Re: comic-book movies, I think I'm pretty much done with Marvel movies... I was never a comic nerd so it was always a thin-ice relationship with me with how much they decided to delve into the mythology and the extended universe and the interconnectedness. I've always felt the SHIELD stuff has been obstrusive and boring in any of the movies I have seen so I doubt exploring that area further will yield anything for me.
That said I do have First Class to watch though from what I've been hearing lately it's sounding like a sequel to that is looking less and less likely at coming off - yet they rush headlong into Green Lantern 2 preproduction... go figure.

I was unimpressed by First Class. The 2 main characters were blighted by supporting characters and actors that were weak.
Recommend Tinker Tailor. Subtle and effective, cast is good and all pull it off really well.

I just rewatched the BBC series and reread the book. I like them both, although they're glacially slow and very little actually happens. Do you know whether they changed much for the film?

Super 8 was ok. The first half of it feels like it could be up there with great Spielberg adventure movies like Jurassic Park and such, but the ending is kinda weak.
Midnight in Paris came out this summer didn't it? Might well've been the movie of the summer for me. Owen Wilson travels through time and hangs out with F Scott Fitzgerald and Hemmingway. He meets Salvador Dali(played by Adrien Brody) and tells him that he's from the future and Dali thinks that sounds reasonable. A good time is had by all. The movie ends.

The first, like, half an hour or something of Tree of Life was, like, the greatest thing I've ever seen and I thought I might be watching my new favourite movie ever. But then it kind of slowed down to a crawl and lost all its pizazz. Still a very cool aesthetic though, very hipster and fresh.

Never saw the series, but yeah the film is very slow.
