Hello to all Thief fans. I have not yet finished SS2 but thought I'd take a little break from it, plan ahead, and get the next game on my hit list ready to play. That is, Thief : The Dark Project. Once again, many good tips in the FAQs here have helped me no end to make this work as I want it to, so thank you!

I have one last problem though, I did a few searches with no luck, so I assume it is less common. Sorry if I've been blind. I haven't got a clue how to solve this. The game now runs fine, the videos run fine, I've got the controls I want, all seems well. I start the first mission, sneak past the guards, KO the civilian for the hell of it, use the sewers to get past the drunkard, KO him to get his key, open the door, and jump into the water. There something peculiar happens. As long as I swim straight ahead, all is well. But if I look down my screen turns completely black. Oddly the game does not crash, as by moving my mouse to look up again, my vision returns to normal & I can carry on with the game.
Me = :confused: :confused:
That bug seems to be somewhat random. First try it happened straight off and on my second try I was able to swim up to the spider cave and it only occured while I was swimming back from there. Messing with my Nvidia card settings did not make any difference either. Any suggestions welcome.

I believe that was the Dark Engine's way of expressing Garrett's head under water. Note that that first waterway is very dark to begin with. Unless you mean the part where you can swim underwater to the hidden area with the spider and chest. In that case, when you look down, the water sound may change, but it shouldn't get dark.

You'd have to see it really. Perhaps I should make a demo if there is a way. Then again if it's a graphic bug it probably would not occur on another machine. It's clearly a bug, the transition is : one frame I am swimming underwater & I can see everything fine, and next thing the whole thing goes pitch black. I don't mean very dark, but litterally pitch black. The HUD is still there, but that is it. It seems it can happen anytime underwater, not just in the tunnel to the spider cave. BTW the sound does not stop, guess I dreamt that bit.

Yeah, I've had that happen to me. The first time I played TDP, I just saved then switched over to Software mode in the video settings. When I got out of the water, I switched back to Hardware mode. The most recent time around, I used the three patches on it... the texture patch, the thieffixed.exe file and another texture type patch (can't remember what it's called) and that seemed to work.

Ahhh I was wondering how to avoid this bug :) I've just gotten by with saving and re-loading so far, but then I have never had the need to play Thief 1 again except for the odd Thief 2 FM that has its prequel made in Thief 1, so I have to go back and play it first.

Thanks ZeroFlight, I've installed the texture & model patches, and bingo, the bug no longer seems to occurs. Plus the whole thing looks better.

That did it, now my fiancee wants to take over and play Thief :(
I won't get to finish SS2 until *was kicked off the computer*
Edit : Heh, bug just happened again. Guess I'll have to get by with save / reload. At least it looks neater now. If it happens to anyone try switching weapons while your screen is black. Sometimes it restores my vision.

Yeah, once in awhile I get it again but on the rare occasions it does, I just look up and it's restored. If it gets to be bad like before, just switch over to software rendering while you're in water.

I remember getting that back in the day. I remember it changing or going away or showing up (can't remember which) with new drivers or new video card or both (can't remember that either). My point is, you might try new drivers, or rolling back to older (perhaps MUCH older) drivers, and see if that helps or lessens the problem.
