System Shock 2 > BioShock 2 > BioShock > System Shock > Doom 3 > nearly every other game ever made > Dead Space
I'd probably rank the first SS higher but unfortunately it came out during that "life is a nonstop quest for sex" period so I didn't play it until it was quite old.

Not "devastating", but in the sci-fi RPG genre, I was thinking any of the Mass Effect games. Among immersive hybrid shooters, I was thinking any of the Deus Ex games.
Having recently played Dishonored, I felt that it's story was a bit weak. But after a quick mental comparison to SS2, I think the Dishonored story was more fully fleshed out with better writing. It just wasn't a particularly interesting story. But when I think of the other games from the late 1990s, SS2 is better than most. For me, Deus Ex really changed my expectations.
Yeah, fair enough. There's as good and better. It's the choice of cliche, I think, more than anything. If this is today's 'standards' someone really needs to tell most of the games industry.

I didn't know about your hatred for DS until this thread - what's the deal? OK, maybe it's not a classic like some of the other games listed here, but worse than Doom 3? Do tell.

The camera is awful, the controls are awful, and it's not scary. I guess the controls being awful is tied into the camera being awful though. I mean, for the love of god, either move the camera back a couple feet so I can something besides the back of the guy I'm controlling, or just move it forward a foot and make it a first person game.

A first person dead space 1 might have been a much more interesting experience. It's clear they wanted to make the player feel claustrophobic with the camera placement, but imagine playing in first person with free aim. That would be cool. Maybe Routine can nail it, would definitely scratch my itch.

I thought the atmosphere was good, but I agree 100% about the camera. A game like Dead Space should be first person. 3rd person is awkward and annoying on a PC with mouse controls and a monitor right in front of you. And if manipulating the on-screen character requires more than the smallest bit of your attention, it compromises immersion. It's not so bad on a console because of the stick controls and sitting further back.

My guess is they'd probably gone too far down the "you ARE the HUD" route to make it anything other than TPP.
I think the atmosphere of the game is great. The controls are fine if you turn off vsync in the game and force it using your video card panel. I agree it would have been better as FPP, but I thought it was a solid 7.5/10 game. Dead Space 2 on the other hand, did away with atmosphere completely and turned it into more of an action shooter, with predictable monster closets.

I have to agree about DS controls and camera even with the 360 pad. I just started on 4th chapter and they are a source of constant frustration and many deaths. I keep not being able to see the enemies bumping into walls and generally feeling like I'm controlling a massive woodlog with a piece of string rather than a character.
I also hate how half the moves are combinations of multiple keys or only work in aim mode. Keeps confusing ne in the worsst moments. Wanted alt fire a mine at the enemy? Here's stomp instead, enjoy getting mauled while you watch the animation!

It probably could have been better, but I'm very forgiving.

Ha ha. Yeah, I had that same problem.
I don't know what weapons other people used but I had the starting gun and the Ripper, both boosted for damage, capacity and duration on the Ripper.
It was such an interesting idea - severing the limbs - but the rest of it is just so meh.
