I don't spoiler-tag anything that's more than ten years old.
Im just saying that respect for these particular series of video games is why we are all here, and it is much greater than our own individual personas on the message boards. Remember, Im just saying.

You only have to spend Adam on upgraded versions. And the only one I bothered to upgrade was electro bolt.
Weird, I can't imagine beating the game on hard without vita chambers and not upgrading some of the plasmids/tonics all the way since the enemies get stronger as you progress. It's been 5 years or whatever since I played it though, so I could be thinking it was harder than it was.

Oh, I did upgrade the tonics, I just didn't buy the upgrades. Most were found, some gifted by Tennenbaum, some were research bonuses, some were invented. You can get at least 3/4 of all the tonics in the game for free. Research does a lot to counter the stronger enemies. I didn't enjoy the research system, but if you don't keep up with your research the game becomes pretty hard.

Research is a pain in the ass in Bioshock.
I still prefer it to System Shock 2's.

Bioshock research was forgettable at best. SS2 research played a major part throughout the game, it had characteristics so to speak. Everyone remembers the sound from the inventory log for example. Bioshock research was derivative.

I loved the research in Bioshock. You had to use some skill to get a good photo, and it actually made sense... take a picture and study the enemies for possible weakspots and just general info. Sounds somewhat realistic to me. Not just click "research' key and hide in a closet or wander around for 3 minutes until the bar finishes.

My problem with Bioshock's research was how clunky it is to be expected to be taking pictures of an enraged enemy who is trying to kill you. SS2 wasn't exactly hands-on research, but it would hum along in the background and only forced you to plan out trips to chemical storerooms to acquire the appropriate chemicals. It didn't force you to drop what you're doing and mess around with research when you're being attacked.

Exactly why I liked it.

Exactly why I hated it. Pain in the ass. Research is flow-destroying. I hated having to go back to some obscure store-room on a floor I hadn't visited in hours just for some obscure chemical.
