I no longer know what you're asking me as you seem to be making the same points I'm making as an argument against me somehow.

How about these Meadowbank and Star Insurance entities who own SS? Just be thankful that they're all turning a blind eye to all of this.
Since they'd be getting money they'd otherwise not be getting/have no hope of ever getting otherwise would be the motivation.

I don't spoiler-tag anything that's more than ten years old.
Don't be a dickhead. I know you're all ooh iconoclasm etc, but don't potentially wreck someone else's enjoyment of the game just to prove a fucking point.

It's great the game is released and all, and I'm sure whoever made NewDark is pretty happy that they had an indirect hand it making it all work, but it just seems really wrong that GOG/Night Dive is taking credit for it all. Would it have been that difficult to say they at least partially used an anonymous, fan based mod to assist in getting it going?
Not sure what the legal ramifications are - maybe they're worried the NewDark author will come forth and demand payment - but straight out lying about it only tarnishes their reputation. If the author of NewDark wanted to make a claim, it's not too hard to prove that their patch is being used.
All that aside - for anyone who's bought it, what are the "extras" they talked about that come with the game?

wallpapers, artwork etc (with a neat star insurance logo everywhere, would be worthless without it).

Hmmm? I'd wager that it'd be entirely possible for the likes of CD Projekt to create a solution similar to at least DDfix if there were no alternatives available.

Reputation with whom exactly, niche communities like TTLG and Strangebedfellows? GOG have been caught using cracked EXEs in the past before, none caused a massive scandal that saw them shedding customers in droves.
System Shock 2 has high reverence in the mainstream press, with Shodan appearing on "Top Game Villain" lists over all the place. This GOG re-release was even covered by Time.com and (
http://www.forbes.com/sites/michaelpeck/2013/02/13/the-return-of-system-shock-2/) Forbes. I really don't think they'd be losing much sleep over losing a handful of customers from TTLG/the Pony bro-esque Thief zealot community/etc.

This Night Dive studios looks a little peculiar too, their domain was only created back in November of last year. They supposedly develop games, but their only project listed on their web site is bringing SS2 back. Speaking of their (
http://www.nightdivestudios.com) website, it looks like anyone here could have created it in about 3 minutes. I dunno, the whole thing seems kind of odd.
Now removing tinfoil hat...

*ahem* It's "GOG", people. Good Old Games. I have no idea why some of you keep thinking it stands for "Good of Games".
